I've got the front grille sanded and ready to paint so now I need to know how to prep it and what paint you guys recommend? Do I need some kind of primer for plastic and is it a semi-gloss black paint I need to use?
Merry Christmas to all and thanks for your help with my Christmas Project!!

Scott, I know this subject has been dealt with.. And alot of good info is here.. Do a search on "Grille" and you should have a few days of light reading http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif If it were me I would prime with an adhesion promoter included, then scuff and shoot as you normally would! I've seen a few grilles chip and flake (mine included) from not so good prep work! Like it's been said here, Prep work is 90% of the final outcome! Good Luck and happy painting as well as holidays!

Here's the process I used on my 70 grill. It was time consuming, but worth it. First, I prepped the area that gets painted the body color by wet sanding with 400 grit. I washed away the sanding sludge and made sure every nook and cranny was absolutly clean, then masked off the area that goes black. I sprayed the bc/cc. After it dried, I masked masked off the body color and used SEM sand free, followed by SEM landau black. I think it looks good and I'm very happy with the results.
Good luck!
Frank.

Thanks to all who responded. I never knew I could "search" for answers to some of my questions. I have lots of reading to do! I'm kind of a "greenhorn" at all this but learning quickly!! I need to get to the shop for some paint!! Thanks again and Merry Christmas!!

You should use some type of plastic primer for the grill. If you dont the paint might not have enough bite to stick to the plastic, where the primer does. And prep work is 90% of a paint job, the better the prep the better the end result. Use wet 500 or so grit and get every little nock and cranny. Wash off with soap and water and dry, wipe down the entire grill with a wax and greaser. Apply the plastic primer and then paint.

MY friend had a 70 and he painted his grille. He used a high gloss black. I dont know about the prep. His grille is REALLY sweat looking.
