I inherited this gun and not sure if it's for primer or color.
Can anyone tell me what this gun is set up to shoot?

Good thing is that you can replace the tips and it can shoot any type of paint you wish. But once you begin to use it as a primer or color most will suggest you stay with it. It is a High Pressure Syphon style. It is the older style and uses more paint and requires higher air pressures. They are more forgiving than the HVLP but you can use it and you can use it for both primer and color as long as you are maticulous with your clean up. I usually take 45 min to an hour to clean my guns when im done for the day. I believe if you pull the needle from the sprayer you will find a number stamped on it that gives the orphus size.

Ahhhhhh, a JGA-502, those are without a doubt my favorite gun of all time. They are darn near sensual :) I have mine I bought when I was about 22 years old for $153.00 new hanging in my garage as art and memories.

I sprayed gallons and gallons of lacquer primer and paint with one. I know I shot some enamels because it was the only gun I used for years. Wait a minute, sure, shot all kinds of bc/cc too. Before I had to go to HLVP I used it (and even after that, watching out for the VOC police :) )

No, it has more overspray than an HLVP but VERY user friendly and it doesn't need nearly as big of a compressor. I shot a LOT of cars in lacquer with a little two horse 20 gallon tank job.

SUPER gun.

That was my gun of choice for 13 years, sprayed primers and all paints- lacquer, enamel, urethane single stage, and BC/CC urethane. I had a hard time adjusting to gravity feed designs after handling the 502 for so long but would never turn back now. The 502 will have a tough time atomizing some of today's high solids clears but if you use a medium solids clear it will work OK. Lots of overspray though! I have 5 of them old guns still hanging on the wall. Caution though-the bodies of these 502 guns are prone to cracking where the fluid tip screws in when overtightened-if the gun starts spitting look at this area.

If you want to step up to a high quaity gun look at Iwata LPH-400LV, awesome gun! Bob

how does that gun compare to Sata?
I have used Sata's @ school and like them.

Sata makes some nice guns but I haven't found any of them to spray as well as the Iwata. Sata's are air hogs in comparison. The Iwata sprays at 18-20psi and doesn't require half the volume of air, doesn't need high flow air fittings, etc. If you get a chance to try one-do it! Find an Iwata dealer in your area and see if they have any demo guns. Bob
