I have a 71 El Camino with a cowl hood. It seems to move a lot when it is open. Also when I close it I have to be carefull so back of hood will not hit fenders. It has 25 coils on each spring. I'm thinking, there might be different springs for this year. Thanks for any help. Jon

Your problem may not be the springs, but the hinges themselves. They tend to loosen up over time. I know the cowl hood has stronger springs than the non-cowl, but other than that I can't help you.

The springs are not the problem. It's the hinges themselves. As they get older the pivot points get loose and this will cause the hood to move around easily when open. They may not feel loose but I'd bet that they are. If you want to find out, remove the springs from the hinges, if they are worn then the hood will be REAL loose without the springs. Good hinges will still feel tight (side to side) even without the springs.
