: Making a patch...

I got my fender back from the body guy today, and it looks great, save for a spot of developing rust on the "dogleg" of the fender. So here is my question... I have the old fender from the old lady incident in 93, and the dogleg is good and rust free. I hear the best things to make patches out of is an original part, because it is the same metal, and guage. So could a cut the part I need out of the old one and put it in the new one? Its not by any of the outside areas, so it should be relatively easy to weld in. I can TIG and MIG fine either way. Recommendations guys? Thanks!

The beggining...The passengers side fender...

So my theory is that I can cut out the middle of the drivers side dogleg, and turn it around and use it on the passengers side, it should work... right?

section out the amount of material you will need from the doner/damaged fender then set it on your good fender and see if you have enough material and the right contour. Trim as needed then scribe a perfect line around the patch metal. Make a perfect cut for a perfect flush fit-the tighter the fit the less the panel will tend to pull during the welding process reducing warpage. Tack weld the piece in place adjusting the fit with hammer and dolly. Then weld complete with alternating tack welds until the panel is fully welded. Should work just fine, pay attention to corrosion protection on the panel's backside or you'll be repairing this again in the near future. Bob graemlins/thumbsup.gif
