: how long before spatter painr?
sheetmetal Mar 7th, 03, 6:19 PM i just got the dp90 in my trunk. how long do i have to wait before the spatter paint goes on? 24hrs? does the spatter go on in several coats? if so how long between coats? how long does the spatter have to dry before it gets sealed? thanks Dave
black&redss Mar 7th, 03, 7:23 PM Let the DP 90 dry overnight @ 70 degrees, scuff with scotch brite pad ( Red Preferably ), apply spatter paint until uniform coverage, probably 5 cans, let dry overnight again, then apply 4-5 cans lacquer based satin clear. Let dry overnight again, and your good to go. I used Duplicolor spatter on my 69...dead match to original (Black&Aqua) as original, and Plasticote satin clear. Looks OEM. Please wear a respirator for this, as you will be in tight areas in the trunk and have plenty of ventilation for your safety. Hopes this helps.
jtjohnston Mar 8th, 03, 4:03 AM 1. 24hrs?
2. ... does the spatter go on in several coats?
3. ... how long does the spatter have to dry before it gets sealed? Yay, somehting ĞIğ know something about tongue.gif
1. At least 24 hours, longer is better.
2. Yes.
3. Take your time. A couple of weeks probably.
It's winter down there too? I'm not sure about temperature, but mine took a long time last summer. I was at it for at least a week. It seemed like a can a day. Two cans the first day.
As for drying time, that took even longer. I left the car in the driveway with the trunk open on every sunny day I could last August, before I put the carpet back. It was still soft to the touch for at least two weeks. The smell was in the trunk at Christmas, when I went out in the garage to make sure my baby was still there.
Someone told me recently to spray clear coat sealer, because most trunk splatter is acrylic, water based. I'll do that in the spring.
Take your time. The stuff clots up real easily. You want to spread it as best you can. Don't try to blow up close and fill in holes. TAKE YOUR TIME. Blow a can around as much as possible and then leave it for 24 hours, or more.
If you are the impatient type, like me, go get a bottle of beer or other liquid consolation. Hell, have one for me. You won't regret taking your time. Did I say, take your time yet? smile.gif
I used 6 cans, if that is any consolation. Wait a while until you seal it.
Plasticote satin clear sounds right. Wait until the splatter is Very dry. My waiting until April or may doesn't bother me in retrospect. I don't want the clear coat to lift the splatter.
Oh yes, wear a respirator or a face mask over a wet face cloth to protext your lungs. He was sooo right on that.

black&redss Mar 8th, 03, 10:23 AM Hi, My recomendations were based on several years of experience, and having a warm and dry garage. Yes humidity will affect the dry times of course because spatter is water-based..don't pile it on at one time, you will get a feel for once you start, and yes do move the can around for uniformity..even though the factory stuff was just shot all over quickly. You shouldn't have any problems.Relax like the other fellow stated, and you will be OK.
bhawk Mar 8th, 03, 4:29 PM do any paint supply stores mix the spatter paint in quart containers so it may be sprayed with a conventional spray gun, such as hvlp? If so, what is the paint code number? Does one have to have a thick needle and tip to spray this, such as 1.7, which is typical for primer surfacer? I have no spray paint experience yet, but since I just bought a spray gun I was hoping to use it to spray my trunk.
black&redss Mar 8th, 03, 5:28 PM I personally have never seen it in quarts or bought it that way. Just buy 6 spray cans..works great..no need to use spray gun.......
jtjohnston Mar 10th, 03, 11:52 PM You don't really want to gunk up your new gun, do you? Cheaper to buy it by the can.
