: I Need Music
Bill70 Aug 18th, 06, 11:29 PM I downloaded some songs from Itunes and made a CD to play in my Silverado. Apparently the factory CD player does not like mpeg-4 files. Does anyone know if I can convert them to something the will play in my truck? Thanks.
Shred Zeppelin Aug 19th, 06, 12:09 AM Did you burn a mp3 cd or a standard format, 80 minute cd? If you burned the former, your Silverado won't accept the disc (you already knew that). If you burned that latter, iTunes should have automatically converted the files to cda format, which is what the players read. You could try another burning software like Nero, although I'm not sure if it will burn the iTunes format (m4a or m4p).
Check the settings within iTunes first and see what kind of cd burning is selected, then go from there. (Long ago when I burned cds with a certain burner using an old version of Nero, they wouldn't play in any GM vehicle. Worked fine in aftermarket players. With the same burner, and the newest Nero version, all the discs work flawlessly in anything.) Hope this helps!
70 SS LS-5 Aug 19th, 06, 1:15 AM If you're using itunes to burn a playlist it will automatically burn then as cda's. Many times the problem is that some automotive cd players can't read certain cd media. The are only a couple particular cd's that all cd players can read. The ones I always use are Memorex Music CD-R 40-700-80

Chris R Aug 19th, 06, 2:46 AM I have had to do that to a few CDs in the past. My Tahoe wont play some newer Dual Disc CDs. I have had to burn them onto a CD-R to get it to work.
Bill70 Aug 19th, 06, 5:58 PM I used a basic 80 min cd-r. I did not used Itunes to create the cd. I'm not sure why my home computer gives an error when burning a cd but I copied the files to a portable 256k drive and burned them on my work computer but did not use Itunes. It sounds like the problem is just copying files instead of converting them. I will try again.
Andy69 Aug 19th, 06, 6:03 PM If you just copy files to a cd and burn it that won't work.
BlueSS454 Aug 19th, 06, 9:33 PM You can use Windows Media Player 10 to burn a music CD. As stated, simply copying the files on to a CD without them being in .cda format will not work.

I use Magix MP3 Maker,it gives you several options, but I either burn mp3 or cda, depending on which vehicle.Whatever you use to make your cds should give you a menu/option.
steelhorses Aug 19th, 06, 10:47 PM a few things. if it's the stock stereo it probably isn't mp3 or wma compatible. most decks will not play mpeg-4 files. even aftermarket ones. at least i've never heard of any that will play them.
so, if you do have a mp3 compatible stereo, just get a program that will convert it from mpeg-4 to mp3 and then burn it to a cd and it should work. if your stereo isn't compatible with mp3's you can do two things (that i know of). again, use a program to convert the files - but this time to .wav format. you won't be able to get as many songs on there as mp3's, but it will work. you should be able to get about 14-17 songs depending on the file size.
the other thing i can think of would be to use windows media player. and like it was suggested, burn a music cd. i don't know if windows media player can read an mpeg-4 format, so you still might have to convert it to something it can read - and then burn your cd.
hope this helps.
Bill70 Aug 20th, 06, 12:03 AM A few more.....what software wil do the converting from mp4 to something else? Also, my computer is a Dell Dimension 4600. I have yet to successfully burn any cd for any type of application. The last time was for Powerpoint presentations. I went into the properties for the cd drive and selected the option to be able to write to this drive. Every cd burn ends up with a generic error message. Any thoughts? Thanks for all the knowledge so far.
steelhorses Aug 20th, 06, 1:54 AM i don't know if this will do the trick... it sounds like it, but i'm not positive. and i don't know if you want to pay the 30 bucks for the full version. http://www.xilisoft.com/mp4-converter.html
as for the error messages i'm not exactly sure what to tell you. i have no idea, but maybe you're telling the burner to burn the cd at a faster speed than it's capable of??? like, say you have an 8X burner and you're telling the computer to burn it at 12X. but that's just a random thought. i really don't know. the answer to that you have may have to get from an actual computer tech guy. i just play around with them enough to get by.
hope you get it figured out.
OR, if you're tired of having to switch cd's in and out... you could get an iPod and then one of the car chargers/radio station things (the thing that broadcasts over a radio signal in just a very short range). i've got one and it's awesome. i've got about 1200 songs on it and i'm nowhere near the capacity for the thing. no more cd's for me.
this thingy-do-bob... except don't buy it from apple. get it off ebay for like 25 bucks instead of 80. http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/2.RSLID?mco=A91226F5&nplm=TF894LL%2FA
