Just finished butt welding my 80% quarter skin in place on 65 malibu. After grinding down the weld line, if finished off real nice. Just a tiny bit wavey if I run my finger over the weld line. I expect that I need less than 1\32 inch of filler to make if perfectly flat. Question---can I put a polyester glaze (such as Evercoat Metal Glaze, or USB Icing) right on top of the bare metal that has been roughed with 50 grit roloc discs, or do I have to put a base filler such as Evercoat Metal to Metal, then put the glaze coat on top. Seems like I have so little to fill that I would like to go straight to the thin glazing putty. Your views please, as I have no body experience.

Don't feel with your finger, use a paper towel and feel with your whole hand,it probably needs more filler than you think. You can use icing on bare metal.

You need to feel well past the weld line, several inches past in both directions. As mike mentioned you will probably need more then you think. Dont use just your finger use the whole hand, move it slowly over the entire area, you will feel the highs and lows in the metal. You need to fix any high spots before you can apply the filler.
Apply your filler past the weld joint, like 3in past in both directions.
A quick note on fillers is that products like icing are for filling imperctions around 1/16-1/8 in. Fillers like all metal, Rage and rage gold are for up too around 1/4in. All the diff in them is how fine the filler material is ground which is TALC. When applying a icing product there is no need for a "base filler" its all the same stuff.
If it was me I would get some RAge or Rage gold all made by evercoat and apply that first, then go to your icing. Just due to the fact you will more then likey need more filler then you think...Eric
