: How to Top Coat POR 15
CDN SS Jan 23rd, 03, 2:24 PM I am planning to spray POR15 on my media blasted trunk floor then top coat with Zolotone ..... after proper drying time can I just topcoat or do I need to sand ??
Underbody planning to spray POR 15 on media blasted underbody then top coat with body color 66SS
Any and all advice appreciated Thanks Bill
Jimmy P Jan 23rd, 03, 2:40 PM It's always advisible to sand the prepared surface to:
(1) smooth it to an even surface, and
(2) Give the topcoat a 'tooth' for better adherance to reduce the chance of peeling or flaking.
POR-15 dries to such a hardened slick surface, it's especially important to sand. I'd go with a 320 grit DA sander and finish by hand with 400.
You know Restomotive labs makes a tie-coat primer for this purpose. Although, I don't know why you'd go to all the hazard of spraying POR when you could brush it on, to just top coat it later.
I personally think POR over the freshly sand blasted surface looks great.

FO_FDYFO Jan 24th, 03, 10:11 AM right. you dont need to spray the por-15 on. it self levels the brush strokes. then you can spray on por-15's tie-coat primer. it will allow you to then spray any color paint over that. i suggest strongly that you use por-25's marine clean and metal ready prior to using the por-15 if you want it to last forever.

Until your lungs get fried. Full respirator and lots of ventilation. Id rather take shots of bleach and snort comet than inhale that stuff. You can also use a roller and then just smooth it out with a foam brush or fine bristle brush.
Just protect your lungs if you spray it, ive heard some really nasty stories from both vendors and people who sprayed without proper equipment.

sneal46 Jan 25th, 03, 8:08 PM I took my frame to a sandblaster and for an extra $25 he sprayed the POR-15 on for me... and he didnt wear any resp protection. When I went to pick up the frame he told me he's been feeling sick and coughing alot ever since he finished my frame... best $25 I ever spent.
69ssragtop Jan 25th, 03, 8:47 PM That POR is the nastiest s$@t I ever opened a can of.I bead blasted my frame then etch primered it then epoxy sealer/primer then bb/cc then after a light scuff semi-gloss black.Sounds like alot of work but I'll NEVER have to do it again.
You were little when you first heard the roar in the 60's.
Then in the 70's drugs and booze and you got lost.
The 80's brought kids and bills and thoughts of those roars as a kid.
The 90's came and all you wanted to do is kick the kids out so you could have a computer room and some extra cash.
NOW comes the 00's you quit dreamin and are spending fistfuls of cash to own your own roaring machine to start that process over for some other unfortunate gearhead kid in the making.

CDN SS Jan 26th, 03, 12:13 AM Al, yes this has happened before and you advised me i don't know what the problem is ...I will no longer turn on the e-mail notification til I figure this out ??? Only started when I got a new computer ??
CDN SS Jan 26th, 03, 12:15 AM Guys, Thanks for all the info on POR toxicity I will use a respirator but may take your advice and just brush on.
GAP1 Jan 27th, 03, 9:33 AM The POR looks great without a topcoat on the chassis and underbody, but if you want to detail certain areas get to it within 24 hours and you won't have a problem. If you spray use a full face chemical respirator change cartridges often and have plenty of ventilation. I ended up brushing it on. Good luck....
CDN SS Jan 27th, 03, 10:12 AM GAP 1 so are you saying if I want to topcoat POR then do it within 24hrs while still somewhat tacky and no need to sand ?? I had heard that and was trying to verify.
If your all wondering why am i doing this I have a CDN built 66SS and the underbody was 60% gloss body color.
FO_FDYFO Jan 27th, 03, 12:00 PM if you are putting anything over por-15 other then por-15 or chassis black you will need to use tie-coat. any other paints will just flake right off. this is for sure! not a guessing game. use the tie coat primer then you can paint what ever you want over it. snading is not required between materials. they chemicly etch to each other. brush por-15. next day spray tie coat. next day spray what ever you want over it. if you want smooth surfaces after the tie coat, spray a typical fill and sand primer, then sand with like 220 grit sand paper then spray your color.

dsolomon Jan 27th, 03, 12:46 PM I had great success with POR-15. I have both brushed and sprayed. On my frame I bead blasted the heavy rust, power washed and cleaned it with the marine clean and metal ready. Coated it with POR-15. About 4 hours after I was done I dusted the entire frame with Eastwoods Self-Etching primer in a spray can. Just enough to see the gray but not to hide the POR-15. The next day after all was dry it felt like fine grit sandpaper. I top coated the frame with chassis black and have had no problems at all. Also did the same on the control arms front and back.
When I put the trunk pans and floor pans in the car I wanted to make sure that I didn't have any rust sneak back. I didn't feel like spending the day with a brush in my hand so I used a cheap spray gun with 10-15 pounds of air pressure. Again after about 4 hours I did the same here with a light dusting of the self-etching primer.
You definitely need to protect your lungs. This stuff takes days to wear off of your skin. I can't imagine what it would do to your lungs. I worked outside using a respirator rated for organic fumes and then threw a sandblasting hood over my head to keep it off my face. The gun cleaned up with lacquer thinner.
If you have any other questions, you can email me. I will be glad to help.

CDN SS Jan 27th, 03, 10:14 PM Gotta love this forum ,great info Thanks
kamino69er Mar 28th, 03, 9:56 PM Would the Eastwood self etching primer be alright to use over Por15?
dsolomon Mar 29th, 03, 7:19 AM That is what I used but it is important that you put a dust coating onto the POR15 after about 4 hours. This will give the POR15 a rought coating that the next layer of primer can stick too.
