Hey guys--

Question: I have a friend that recently had the front of his Corvette repainted, and the black doesn't match exactly--and he's wondering why.

I know a perfect match doesn't occur unless the whole car is painted, even with black. But I need help explaining why.

Second question: Back in the early nineties when I painted my Chevelle black, there were two PPG "blacks" on the shelf at my paint store. I was told at the time that the difference inbewteen the two was the base of black was acheived---one from blue, one from brown. Do you guys recall that, or was my paint guy BS'ing me? It's been awhile since I've painted anything, so I am a bit out of touch with what would be on the shelf nowdays.

Please help,

Thanks!!!!!

If one were single stage and one is bc/cc you can see a difference also. I always use the blackest black, most companies have a factory pack black to use. I've tried mixing a few blacks from formula and always seem too light or brown. The black from blue should appear much blacker. He could have em blend the color into doors if the color is that bad.

There is a 9800 and 9700 black, both which are PPG tints.
Also depending on how much reducer you mix you can make it appear blacker.
PPG suggests mixing 9800 and 9700 with only 1/2 part reducer. But if you add the whole 1 part it is a different shade.
I think 9800 is the blue black.

As Mike mentioned SS and baseclear black are night and day.

And who is to say that the painter just figured spray on some 9800 black instead of mixing the correct black that the vette calls for.
