furball8994 Aug 14th, 06, 4:20 PM I could have sworn that fed. law prohibited the sale of blank trim tags. But its nice to know that E-bay allows it.
396-375 Aug 14th, 06, 4:21 PM WHAT A _ _ _ _ SHAME!!! I'LL LET YOU FILL IN THE BLANK!

No, you must be thinking about VIN tags which are illegal to remove or alter.
Body (trim) tags are not ilegal to remove or replace.
glennslanaker Aug 14th, 06, 7:22 PM trim tags have been available for a long time. it's not illegal at all. the sticky area is that you could make your '69 malibu an SS only color (via the aftermarket trim tag) and all the sudden you have legitimized your clone.
RAMBO Aug 14th, 06, 7:29 PM Yeah, what glenn said... Trim tag won't do anything for you other than ligitimize your color choice, or swap to bucket seats.
glennslanaker Aug 14th, 06, 8:19 PM the exception to what you are saying ben, is that someone could pick (is it monaco orange) that is a SS only color. i.e. it was not available on anything other than a SS car. so if they do that and try and pass the tag off as original, it's like doing a fake build sheet at that point.
sloppyjoe Aug 14th, 06, 9:03 PM And only 17.00 to ship to my house. A special place in hell for this kind of snake!!
Andy69 Aug 14th, 06, 9:26 PM I could have sworn that fed. law prohibited the sale of blank trim tags. But its nice to know that E-bay allows it.
yeah they decided to allow them because there is no "vehicle specific information" on the trim tag.
71elkySS454 Aug 15th, 06, 10:13 PM I can't get to my car right now, but I thought the lettering on the factory trim tags was raised. The lettering on the one for sale is actually 'stamped in'. ???
DaleM Aug 16th, 06, 1:05 AM PLUS $10 per character
SS69Chevelle Aug 16th, 06, 1:17 AM yeah for about $482 for a Baltimore tag and $452 for a Kansas tag, you too could have a trim and color change....shipped right to the door after figuring the stamping, tag buy and shipping. What a racket. What you don't see is how many people have already or are doing it. I'm sure they have the "we'll keep your email info on file" disclaimer, but providing the tag and stamping would sound like an partner in the crime to me. Numbers or not I don't think that the tags should be allowed...another loop hole found and exploited.
Junkyard Dawg Aug 16th, 06, 10:05 AM I can't get to my car right now, but I thought the lettering on the factory trim tags was raised. The lettering on the one for sale is actually 'stamped in'. ???
If we're unlucky it will be stamped from the other side as to replicate the original.....
glennslanaker Aug 16th, 06, 10:22 AM i think everyone is missing the point here. you can only enhance the value of your car modestly with a new trim tag, UNLESS you changed your '69 SS clone to monoco orange or daytona yellow. maybe in other years there were SS only colors as well. i can't believe no one else has commented on that issue.
those exterior colors appearing on the trim tag have been taken as proof of authenticity.
Neal Wright Aug 16th, 06, 2:10 PM Guys, this is terribly old news!
Glenn, you're correct ... been discussed many times, was even in the original literature. Orange & Yellow can only be had on SS models in 1969. This makes a '69 Chevelle one of the easiest of all to clone ... before then, all SS had 138 VIN tags (which is prohibited to reproduce!) ... and no other year (that I'm aware) had SS-only colors.
The trim tags ... wow, if you think those haven't been produced already you really are living in a hole. I think I've found them in Hemmings clear back to the 80's. All of you think this cloning to make a profit is something just invented ... been done for years, just was never worth doing to muscle cars until recently.
Anyhow ... the people making the tags, so what. They're not doing anything illegal, nothing immoral, and to some restorations a good service.
I do think some lawyer's are going to be making some money here soon though ... as I believe some of these fools are leaving paper trails behind, of how they've cloned a more valuable model, sold it as that, and made huge profit. Wow, talk about an easy fraud case (if you can find the receipts) ... and at the profits these cars are selling for, you just found yourself with a federal felony!!
If you're playing "expert" because you've learned how to decode a trim tag ... don't! You don't want to be the fool in this game.
Thanks, Neal
704EVER Aug 16th, 06, 4:39 PM I guess we'll see a few more orange and yellow cars hit the market shortly. Again, without good docs, any car will be considered suspect and it's up to each potential buyer to do their homework. With the prices they're getting for the well done clones, the cars with heavy documentation will just keep rising in value. I really think the majority of Chevelle guys that come on this site are here because it's a great hobby and they love their cars. I feel bad for the new guy that just wants to buy his dream car after all the years of raising a family etc. but they HAVE to do their homework. The more everyone can spread the message to their friends who may be considering a purchase that there are a lot of fake cars out there, the better off this hobby will be. There are scammers on every corner of life, you just have to know how to spot them.
Junkyard Dawg Aug 16th, 06, 5:56 PM Glenn I think most of us get the point, trust me I feel the same way as you.....maybe all of us (that believe in God) should start praying every night that those who clone to make a profit at resale should be cursed with a miserable life in the pokey.
Amazing they were cloning SS cars in the 80's when there was a better supply and probably not as high of a demand. I wonder if anyone is currently cloning a 2002 Z28, and I don't mean just the badges.
Dean Aug 16th, 06, 6:28 PM Anything of value that can be counterfeited will be counterfeited but real experts usually can tell the differences.
It's been happening forever.
Color codes stamped on trim tags don't really mean anything.
Like Neal said, don't base your judgement on it.
blue67ragtop Aug 16th, 06, 7:00 PM These have been available for quite awhile through ads in Hemmings Motor News, as well as block stamping equipment etc. One of my favorite magazines is Hemmings Muscle Machines. Recently they ran an article on a guy who was arrested for faking a Hemi Cuda. This guy had used an altered VIN however. Although they are not allowing VIN tag sales they are part of the problem at Hemmings and should not have been surprised by the Cuda story. You don't have to read between the lines much on these ads to know they are being sold to allow someone to commit fraud.
71elkySS454 Aug 16th, 06, 10:16 PM What Neal said. This is old news! You have been able to buy repop trim tags for 20 years! Way back in the late 80's I got tired of every Tom, Dick and Harry telling me my car was the wrong color, so I bought one just to have the color code changed. Would the color change make the car more valuable? Probably not. Do I think I did anything wrong? No. When I sold the car, I told the buyer and gave him the original trim tag. So now everyone flame me!!
