: Lowering seats...

I just bought my dream car - a 71 Chevelle. My only problem is I'm tall and the view/sitting position would be SO much better with a slightly lower seat. This one has the original bench - which I don't really want to change.

So - Is it feasible (and safe) to have it lowered? Chop the supports a bit - 2" max.? I'm wondering if this compromises anything?

I can live with it the way it is, but when it's so close to perfect...

The foam in the seat cushion is 2 inches thick. It probably could be cut to less than that, but it would not be much fun to do. As for the legs of the seat, it looks like they could be cut an inch for sure and maybe 1.5 inch if you are careful. I am looking at a bench seat for a '72, so this info should work on yours.

My tall buddy mounted his seat 2" further back in the car. I think he made brackets that bolt in. Works well for him.

you can use steel strap as extenstions of your seat mount. i'd try first adding about 1/2" thickness of washers under the front mounts. you may be surprised at the results.

Thanks for the tips...

Huff - I'm not sure I understand that; extensions and washers to shorten the seats??

It's not the leg room that i want to increase - it's my view out the front window. I think I can cut the 1.5" or so he mentions above...

Be sure that the center of the seat doesn't hit the driveshaft hump, that will be the determining factor on how low you can drop it.

It makes the seat lean backwards a little bit, kinda like a reclining back. I tried it in my Camaro, and it does make a difference. It's cheap and easy to try, just some washers and longer bolts.
