I just pulled out my rear window in my 68 malibu and want to install my new one and was wondering how to do it. I bought new butyl tape and was wondering where and how to install the blocks and what are they for?

thanks,

lucky, they make the rubber blocks to go on the bottom to hold the glass in the proper position until the tape sets up. many guys just leave them in. and they make a special primer that you need to apply before you lay the tape in the glass channel.

Lucky,

You might also want to think about using POR15 in the channels and new chrome clips. I did both and am very happy with the results. The clips are plastic, easy to use, and made for new Jeep Cherokees. Any glass shop should have them. Also, unless you want to be liable for the window, you might want to have the shop put it in for you. Mine was $40 to R&R. Beats breaking a $200 rear window.

I did por-15 the window channel, so do i still need to prime it so the tape will stick like bottlerat said? Also i saw in a recent post that someone said there is also some silcon or some type of seal you can put around the window once its in for more leak protection. Is this true or not a good idea.

thanks for the reply's

Lucky, I used POR15 and then the shop layed the butyl in over it. They also used a black silicone-like caulk to finish the seal. BUT, it was not silicone! They warned me that silicone can trap water and cause more problems.

i hit my channels w/ some por after the car had been painted and then used 3M 'Windo-Weld" Ribbon Sealer,,,, "windo weld" also comes in a tube to use in a caulk gun but that can be messy!... this ribbon sealer is much cleaner and more manageable.

You leave the rubber blocks in to keep the window from sagging over time. Get a "Body by Fischer" from manual for your car and read a page or two on glass instalation. You will know all thats needed to know after that. IMHO por-15 is not a requirement to install you front or rear glass. Por-15 came out 30 years after these cars were built!
