I went to the store the other day and i saw some automotive primer made by rustoleum, i remembered reading the resto shop area of this site and it said rustoleum wasnt compatible with automotive paints. I checked out rustoleums website and there was a press release saying it was ideal for autos. Im assuming its a new product or maybe ive just never paid much attention to that isle but does anyone know anything about it? Id like to primer the whole thing myself because i dont have the kind of money to hire out all the work, and i dont have a compressor or a paint gun. Im pretty good with an aerosol can and im willing to put the extra time in to make it look great. I was hopeing some of you would check out their site and tell me what you think. rustoleum brand automotive primer (http://www.rustoleum.com/brand.asp?frm_brand_id=37&SBL=1)

That primer is designed for the typical backyard doityourself touchup, I've never used it but bet it is a laquer based product. Truth is I've never used anything from a spraybomb that impressed me. The etching primers available in spraycans are junk IMO, they contain no acid since it's illegal to sell a product in aresol form containing acid. A good self etching primer or epoxy sprayed out of an airless sprayer would be far better if you don't have a compresser. A Wagner Power painter will work, my neighbor just did a car trailer from start to finish with a Wagner. Using flamable materials in an electric device is not recomended though and you'd be at your own risk. If you can get the bodywork done and primer work done take the car to a professional painter. Transtar and PPG also offer rollable primers that work extremely well, they are designed for production use but would be another option for you without a compressor. PPG markets their version under the specialty coatings line. Shops using the Transtar version seem to prefer it over PPG's because the activator has a longer shelf life. Bob

By the time you paint a car with spray cans,it will cost you almost as much as a gallon of decent primer. Tried to paint my buddies work van with Krylon.Used about 30 cans and still didnt get it all covered.

The rustoleum ive used on lawn funiture was enamel based, i had to cut it up to 60% to go thru the gun. Ok results but i'd never put that crap on a car.

Hey Bob, which Wagner did he use? I see they've come out with a new one that looks very similar to the old siphon style guns. Seems to me that the Wagner would be OK for primer and such since you're just gonna sand on it anyway.
