I just bought 15x8 wheels for the front, but I haven't put them on yet. I don't see where there would be any problem with 7's in the front, nor with 8's all around. You just nedd to make sure of what the "suggested rim width range" is for the tires that you'll be using. I like to use www.tirerack.com (http://www.tirerack.com) to click on any given tire I have, or that I'm interested in (you can shop by tire size) and once you click on any given tire, in the next window you'll need to click on the "spec" link to see the chart that lists the rim width requirement for that particular tire.

Weld Draglites 15 x 7 with a 3.5 backspace on the front with BF Goodrich 235-60's. The rears are 15 x 8 with a 4.5 backspace and 275-60's BFG's.

Shannon, I've had several '70-72 cars, and ran 15x8 rallies, with either 235 or 245/60/15's. I would stay the same all the way around. That way you can balance and rotate them. I had a set of 15x7 weld on front of one, and 15x10's on back, and had to raise the rear as they would catch the lip of the back wheelwells, especially if someone was riding in the backseat.

So Now I have room for 15x10's in back with a 5.5" backspacing. :)

I like the look of bigger on the back. Mine 69 has 275's on the back & 215's on the front. The rim size needs to be matched to the width of the tire to get optimum wear & performance on the street. I know a 10" tire will fit on a 7 or 8" wheel but it's not the best. I also don't like the look of all four being the same size & I don't care about rotating tires.

You had plenty of room before the lips were rolled,Billy. Doing so just gave you more.

What backspacing numbers were you using on the 15x10's,Doug?

Here's 15x7.5 & 15x8.5 - 255/60 & 275/60 tires. 3.875 backspace. Looks like the rears would clear even if the car was at the stock height but it would be close.

I can't remember what the backspacing was, as I had so many different wheel/tire combos on it. I ended up solving the scrub problem by buying coil over shocks to lift it 2". I had BFG's on it, and right off the bat they had a white cut mark where the inner wheel lip caught the tire. But, the lift in back caused the front to squat, and you had to be careful going over bumps, or going up an angled driveway, as the fronts would bottom out. I eventually changed back to the same size all the way around.

Just a hunch but it sounds like the backspacing figures were inadequate.

They probably were, as I bought them used, but freshly polished for $100, years back. Live and learn.

with the fenders rolled now you could stuff some fatty tires back there now!
