I have a 1968 SS396 that I want to take out the flex fan and put in a clutch fan. The motor is a 69 375hp with a short water pump and the radiator and shroud are 1968. What would be the correct clutch fan and blades for this combo? And what size spacer do I need? Anyone have pictures of a 68 or 69 fan/radiator? Are the shrouds the same for a 68 and 69? The flex fan is really not keeping it as cool as I'd like and from what I've read on this board, the factory clutch fan is by far the best option (both cooling and safety). Part numbers would be great if possible. Is the shroud for a 68 longer and therefore not allow the fan blades to stick out at least half way? If that is the case, maybe I need to put a 69 shroud on?
Sorry for all the questions...
Thanks!

In your same boat and here's what I've found. I too have a 66 Chevelle with a 396 and have just pulled the engine to have it re-Built. I have spent hours talking to reputable engine shops, speed shops and Radiator guys about cooling my 66 SS with the 360 HP. Here's what I'm going to do. I just ordered an Alumitech Aluminum Radiator as mines shot. I have a correct fan shroud and am NOT using a fan clutch after all. All my professional Eng guys are saying use a 6 or 7 blade STEEL fan bolted directly to the engine with a spacer to have the blades half in and half out of the shroud. They all say that this is the best way to cool the eng. This direct bolt will provide more CFM'S to your block than an electric or Fan clutch. I'm using a 17 1/2 STEEL fan that fit's perfectly into my stock 66 shroud. I've already ordered a clutch fan setup that I'll have to return when it arrives. Good luck and let me know what you did. Here is what I just did...after many tries with stock clutches that didn't lock up and two flex fans that howled louder than the motor itself. I'm not real fond of direct drive. They are very noisy.
Summit Racing sent me to the tech support guys at Flex-A-Lite. They recommended the FLX-5718 fan. It's rigid but waaaay lighter than the stock fan. The clutch is a heavy duty type, FLX-5655. It has more drag when cold than the stock one. They work great together. You get some fan noise for the first 10 miles or so, then it quiets down as things flow to where the are supposed to be.
I am very happy with it and it cools very well. I have a 67 SS, 427ci with a short pump. This is your set up, Joe. The part numbers are for Summit Racing. Flex-a-lite does not sell direct.
Good luck
Chuck

Thanks Chuck! Just what I was looking for. I just placed the order with Summit this morning. Can't wait to get her cooled back down.
