I was at Pick-n-Pull on Airbase Parkway in Fairfield, CA today and came across two El Caminos, a 65 and a 66. They were picked over pretty good, but there were some usable parts left.

If it was a 3rd gen I might have to make a field trip...

Ever check out the yard specializing in GM sports down on Old Oakland Road in San Jose? They have an interesting collection of stuff.

What are they ripping off? One nice thing about Pick-n-Pull is that a DZ302 motor is only $175, including the core, and less than $100 on half price day. I got a complete 9" Ford Granada trac-loc disc brake rear for my Nova for $140. I bought a complete running Dodge Cummins turbo diesel motor for less than $200. I've got a complete running 500" Caddy motor for less than $100. Call the GM salvage place in San Jose and see how much they want for a complete 65 Elky door. I'll bet it's much higher than you would pay at P-n-P.

Pick-N-Pull a rip off??? Far from it...

They are actually pretty fair, because everything is the same price no matter size, year or condition...

You want to know "rip off", than go to that GM Salvage place listed above, or some other wrecking yard where they price stuff spur-of-the-moment. I have been quote two completely different prices for the same EXACT part, by the same exact counterman (about 3 weeks apart). The first time (higher price) I came straight from school (clean and dressed nicely, driving a "decent" car). The next time, the price was 1/3, but we were all greasy and driving a beater parts hauler (my brother actually inquired the second time, but I was standing right there)... If they can charge more, they will (I know, its a business)...

A DZ coded 302 for $175. DZ, not a D code 283, or a 010 350 block or complete engine. A real 302, #186 heads, aluminum intake, etc. Have to see that to believe it. A friend of mine has 5 at last count, and you couldn't buy the intake off one for $175.

If you could find one at a Pick-n-Pull the DZ 302 would be a screamin deal. The trick is to find one. Same thing with most of the muscle car parts.

Where Pick-n-Pull gets really interesting is when you can go shopping for parts to update your classic. It is about the only place around here where they will let you wander around as much as you want and check out anything and everything. It is pretty much worth the $2 to get in just for the entertainment value alone.

My old biology teacher went to a P-n-P and scored a DZ302 that he put into his hot rod back in the late 70s early 80s. He had to carry it out so he strapped up and more or less had the thing tied to his back. THats the part I don't believe. But I think I've seen and know I've heard it run.

Now one of you guys has to find me some wagon parts out there in that dry heat. Please.

They sell any V-8 engine for the same fixed price as any other one. They don't differentiate between common and collectible, so a rare 302 V-8 is just another engine to them, as is a 454, etc. Same with all other parts. I scored the ashtray out of a 68 Nova for a guy back east, he couldn't believe i could get it for $3 or so. He was offering $75 for a useable one on the Nova board. I've taken the posi out of a 2nd gen Camaro, the 8.5" gears out of the front end of a GM 4x4 and the 8.5" rear out of a 75-79 Nova and made a 3.42 posi setup for a 1st gen Camaro right in the yard. At the checkout counter it's rung up as a complete drum brake rear for about $75. Half price days are especially busy.

I have seen 1 or 2 out here, called Pull a part, or something like that. One down off Buford Highway, and the other down below Atlanta , near Ft. Gillem, but all the cars looked like '90 -up models, no early cars, especially no muscle cars.
