I just got my 72 chevelle repainted. Was originally white/blk stripes. Now is HOK Shimrin blue pearl (Urathane base/clear) with silver/white stripes. I like the color a lot but im already considering changing the color next year. I saw 4 chevelles in the past week with almost the same color. I was thinking about going with black with white stripes. Here is my question. Do i have to take the car back down to bare metal to do this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

by the way, here are some pics of the new paint. http://attitashcondo.tripod.com/toms72chevelless502/

thanks
tom

There is no need to go to bare metal when repainting. Unless there is a heavy build up of previous paint jobs, I would block sand with 400 wet paper and then seal.

Hold on, if that HOK job is in good shape and only needs a repaint for color change, just sand it and shoot it. A sealer would not only be a waste of money it would just add work and texture to the final product. That urethane clear is a GREAT base for paint.

Now my two cents on the color change, DON'T DO IT. If you think you are going to paint a car as popular as a 70-72 Chevelle a different color than everyone else's, you are kidding yourself. If you think black is going to look that much BETTER, than fine. But don't think you are going to have this rare stand out car JUST because of the color. How many Hugger Orange '69 Camaros do you see, thousands. But how many really stand out, only a few. Because the others, are "just hugger orange Camaros." A few though, knock your socks off, they stand out from the rest because of DETAIL.
Unless you chop the top or something like that, your Chevelle will be one of many at every show. You can tub it, stick a blower out of the hood, paint it candy, put the most unique graphics or flames on it. It will still look sorta like another one at the show, they are popular for a reason, they are great cars. So, just be sure yours is a cut above the rest, if that is your thing, to stand out. Or, simply have a nice car and enjoy yourself.

Tom-- Your car looks fantastic. I love the stripe/graphics color with the blue paint for the car that you chose. With the finishing touches, you've got a real headturner. I noticed your post because I got my '67 back from the guy who painted it & notice I have different colors (shades) on the various body panels on my car. He must have painted it at different times/days & with different batches of paint. He told me that it took a lot more paint than he anticipated, hence I had to shell out more $$. My car is in about the same stage of progress as yours in the picture. I'm putting another transmission in it before & try to decide whether to have it repainted elsewhere or finish putting it together & drive it for a while. Mine is also Basecoat/Clearcoat. I went with Dupont products all the way, but I think now that the painter didn't have as much experience as he claimed with it. I'm still on the fence about whether to have my car reshot by someone else. If I do, I'll have to wait another season due the price of the materials to do it again. Good luck with your ride & keep us posted with your progress. Odie.

If you like it, leave it as is. Never mind the other 4 Chevelles you saw that were the same color. It's about what YOU like, even if it's the same as someone else's.
Paint it the way you want, and don't worry aout anyone else.
