: Question on HVLP Spray Guns (Gravity or Suction)

I'm an engineer and tend to need a lot of information before I can make a decision.

For applying materials like POR-15, epoxy primers, primer surfacers, and topcoats is there any advantage of using a gravity feed HVLP gun over a suction HVLP gun?

I'm looking into purchasing a gun that gives good all around performance in turns of finish, being able to apply in tight spaces, different angles, and easy gun cleanup. I have heard good things about both types of guns and would appreciate any feedback.

I'm sandblasting my 69 SS floorboards and trunk with black beauty over the next couple days and want to treat with their metal ready, then spray POR-15 primer and chassiscoat black this weekend (or as soon as I can decide on what gun to purchase). After that I'll be stripping the body and probably using DP-40 Epoxy primer so it will be stable until I have someone finish up some minor bodywork and paint it.

Should I go with Gravity or Suction????

Yes, I know there are also pressure guns, but don't want to mess with that type, do I ????

We have switched over to all HVLP and gravity feed guns. The best reason I can give is with the price of materials these days, a siphon feed always tends to leave some in the bottom, and the gravity feed you mix what you need and thats it. They also use less material when spraying, less overspray, clean up is easier too.

Expensive HVLP gravity feed gun for any exterior final coat work. That seems to be what every body shop is using now. The quality of the gun makes a difference.

Cheap gun (gravity or siphon) for primer or POR-15 since accidentally having it dry anywhere in your expensive gun will ruin your day (or just generally **** you off at ruining the gun).

In all cases, the gravity feed will save material because it will feed pretty much everything in the cup.

I use a Devilbiss Finishline HVLP gravity feed spray gun with the disposable liners as 327dave pointed out. After switching to this gun I won't use anything else. Cleanup is a snap.

My vote is for the DeVilbiss Finishline gravity feed HVLP also. It's my favorite.
