Can anyone tell me if the back panel just under the trunk is suspose to be painted black for a 69 SS?

Also, does anyone know if the 70-72 SS hood and decklid stripe (stencil) kits will work on a 69 SS? Like the look of the stripes, but I don't know if the stripes will fit dimensionally on the hood or the decklid.

thanks in advance for your help.

I don't know about the rear panel (i've got an elco not a chevelle...)

but for the hood stripes... The "correct" 70-72 stripes are not perfectly square, the out side lines follow the lines of the hood, and are not parallel(thus not the same for '68-69).

My stripes run parallel starting at the base of the dual SS humps.(hope that makes sense)

Tomorrow i'll take a picture with the digital camera and post it.

I've seen a few different variations on these.

Mine run straight onto the front panel and wrap around it (like a camaro) i've seen another guy's that ended just at the base of the hood, with the outter edge rounded (like the '70-72)

ok... I'm too lazy to go pull the cover off my car to take a better picture, but here are a couple I already had on my computer.

69stripes 1 (http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/69stripes-1.jpg)

69stripes 2 (my car) (http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/69stripes-2.jpg)

69stripes 3 (different angle) (http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/69stripes-3.jpg)

I'll still try and take a better picture tomorrow that will show the pinstripes and the relation to the bulges.

dshvrs,

I'm not the picky type and you can do want you want with your car but if you are going for product correctness the 1969 SS stripes were on the side of the car from the factory and not across the hood and decklid. I'm not a stickler for this kind of detail (my SS is heavily modified from factory). It's just that I know people who have put the 70-72 style stripes on their 1969 SS and then were disappointed when they found out it was "incorrect".

As I understand it, the twin stripe kit WAS indeed an option on late 69's. Chevelles, not Elkys. The side stripe option was NOT an option on Elkys, although many dealers did apply them to SS models. It's your car, do what you want!

Yes, the tail panel below the trunk lid should be satin black on a '69 SS.

The debate as to the availability of the twin decklid stripes on 69's has never really been settled. I personally don't like it. I've seen an article that says the option was available in late 69, however if you got it, your car would come with a standard Malibu hood, even if it was an SS. Can't vouch for the validity of the article, but it's your car, so do what you like.

thanks everyone for your comments.. I thought that these stripes were optional in late 69 but didn't know if the 70-72 stripes were the same size as the late 69 stripes (if they really were available).

my car is currently getting painted right now and i need to supply the painter with some photos of the stripes i want painted or actual stencil kits. the pictures and this info really helps out. thanks...

The rear panel is satin black. Really think about those stripes before you put them on. Once you put them on they will probably stay on until the next repaint. I am biased and like the look of the side stripes better on the 69. Every owner have their preferences though.
