I have been trying to paint my underside hood for my 69 ss396 chvelle with low gloss black underhood black from eastwood, then duplicolor, and lastly plasticoat and keep ending up with a splotchy overall look/coverage when done weather there are 2-5 coats of the low gloss black over a base grey primer coat before trying each of the 3 paint brands.

I tried krylon semi gloss 1613 which had a nice uniforn coverage but it was just too dull but covered well.

Whats up with this,i painted the underhood in the past with gloss black and had no problem,is there a trick to getting these low gloss paints to cover evenly on large areas?

I try to hold the can appor 10 inc away from the hood and use even sweeping motions and got the glooss black in the past and simi black krylon to work fine but the low gloss is giving me fits for reasons i dont know.
I have used the low gloss black on smaller enging brackets, pwr steering pump etc with no problem,i can't figure it out.

Could it be the primer is not dry enough and reacting with the 1st coat of low gloss black ? Even if it was wouldn't the 2nd/3rd coats even out the appearance and cover it up?

I dont have a spray gun or anyone to that has one so please stay with suggestions for using good quality spray cans if possible.

Any ideas/suggestions help would be greatly appreciated.

I used Plasti-kote simi-gloss ultra enamal on the under side of my 71 hood and it looks great. The plasti-kote is sold in most PepBoys stores. With spray cans, you can't stop. You have to keep a wet line all the way across the hood . this way you won't have any dry spots....Bill

One of the problems with aerosols is keeping it wet thoughout the whole area. What is happening is it is drying at different rates as 70SS touched on. You need to keep it the same wetness, this is dang hard with a large area.

Thanks for the info guy's,what you say about keeping the hood evenly wet at all times while painting sounds like where i made my mistake while painting the underside of my hood. I will give it another try using your suggestions.

One more question,is krylon paint enamal or a laqure because it does not say anywhere on the can and i want to be careful not to put laqure over enamal if i decide to go with krylon.

Thanks.....Scott
