hey all,

im stuart in north carolina. ive got a '71 chevelle (malibu) 350 4bbl. its got an aftermarket radio, pertronics flamethrower, power steering, cragar wheels, flowmaster exhaust, flame pedels ( they light up with this sweet blue color when turned on :p), holley street dominator intake. thats all i can think of as of right now.

well anyways, i noticed that my GEN light was on when the car is off, when the car is started the light simply goes away. i recently got a new alternator and installed that. just wondering what that light means and how to get rid of it.

Is this with the key on and car off? If so it is supposed to be that way. If the key is off and out and the light is still on, that a problem. Post back whether key is on or not.

likely bad diode in the alternator if key is off

My experience with this...assuming you are experiencing "key off" "gen lite on"
...is the stator in the alternator is shorted...lite may go out with engine running...alt.making "whining" type noise and get real hot real quick.

The alternative to replacing the alternator again is to just take the bulb out of the light!

ya its with the key off and the gen light is on. when car is running, light goes out. no whining or anything.

You can disassemble the alternator and check the diode trio. There are three doides on a strip inside. They act like a one way street...using an Ohm meter, there will be high resistance one way and almost zero the other direction.
A bad diode will cause the dash light to light up dim.

Stu...... Did you have this problem with the old alternator?..... Or did it come as an "added extra" with the new one?
Have you checked your voltage output?
