Hey guys, I found that my frame has a small crack starting at the aft outboard steering box mounting hole. No rust, just looks like a stress crack. Can I just stitch it up with the welder and build it up that way? Or is there a more correct way to repair it. I used to have to fix them on my buddys WAY lifted CJ but never on a Chevelle. Do I have to get to both sides or will the penetration I get from hitting one side be enough? Manual steering by the way... WHEW... Thanks..

Do a search .. I remember a few months ago there was someone who had the same problem. I think they ended up welding a plate behind it and also welding the crack closed.

On cracks I have always liked drilling a hole at the end of the crack. Weld the hole closed after and brace if needed. Cracks like to keep running in the grain of the metal and reappear a short time after repairs.

To get full penetration you better "V" the crack with a grinder. Even a "V" half way through the material will really help. Drilling the hole at the end is required too.
