: NOW WHAT?!

Well now I feel like an idiot! I bought my 68 chevelle last year with the idea of fixing into a fun street machine. I parked it and spent the last twelve months putting together my drive train. ( 420 blown 355 )

I then turned my focus to the car. It is a nice straight 2dr hardtop, with unusual amounts of undercoat on the passenger side. After removing the front clip (and the undercoat) to refurbish the frame I find a tiny "patch job". It is actually a 1/4 inch thick piece of steel welded over a crack. The crack begins just in font of the fire wall and runs right through the frame holes.

I normally would have found this but the previous owner had blended the weld job perfectly with the frame contours. Needless to say I need some advice. Can I replace that section and maintain strength? Are the kits? I plan for wheels up launches and want the car to stay under me when it lands.

Thanks

this is no big deal, just make sure it is repaired properly or redo it. Is the patch layed over the top like a tire patch? If use a die grinder with a cut off wheel you can cut just the welds and remove it. Then grind off the extra welds, "V" out the crack and reweld it. Also, drill a hole through the metal at the end of the crack, (make sure it is at the end)and this will make sure that you get good penetration and the crack will not come back.
