: Smashed my 70 - Need help...

I backed into a tree tonight (don't ask) - Smashed the rear bumper in just to the right of the plate. Trunk lid dented and has a "kink" on the right side that perfectly matches the one in the top of the 1/4 panel. >:(

Who makes the best rear bumper and trunk lid for this. I'm bummed because it had a nice straight original bumper on it and now it will be some re-pop crap but I want it to fit nice. Thickness? Any suggestions?
Also, Has anyone used a GoodMark trunk lid? Hows the fit? Man, I am bummed. I looked behind me but the dang tree was in my blind spot on the LH 1/4 and did not see it. Was just barely moving idiling in reverse and WHAM!!! - I could have cried but I kept it together. I got out expecting the rear bumper to be bent and that's all I saw at first and then my 7 year old boy says "was this like this"? - pointing at the kink in the trunk lid and 1/4. - Man, No 5mph bumpers on this thing.
Help me out guys.

Thx.

My rear bumper came from Ground Up, I didnt mic it but its just about as heavy as the original and fit very good. My trunk lid is a repro and I had to do a little work on the upper corners, they werent folded over all the way like they were supposed to be.
Bummer about your car.

really- Sorry to hear- man that is a nice car too...
a little TLC and some cashola and it will be just a memory-
might be able to have them pull most of that out on the 1/4 and have to only replace the bumper and lid- Crosses fingers* I hope so-

it happens to us all from time to time. i went on a drive to saratoga, WY a couple years ago. stopped a roadside bar, just had 2-3, i wasn't drunk. well, turns out there's a pole in the middle of the parking lot that i never saw, hit it so hard my car died. my damage was solely on my bumper and taillights. and this all happened to a mint '71 442 convertible which i still have. i guess that's why people don't like to drive 'em.

I would just send the dented bumper to http://www.tricityplating.com/
As a core and have them send you one that has been rechromed.
As for the rear deck lid I would try and have someone fix it first before I would use a repop lid, JMO

A GOOD chrome shop can fix and rechrome yours if you want to stay orig to the car.It mighy not be cheap mine was about 300.00 but it's really nice, and orig from factory with the car.

If you decide to send your bumper to a plating shop.....have them fix your original bumper. That way you know it's the original. The scam at some shops is to take your original and fix it, sell it to a restorer or someone that wants an original. They send you a reproduction. I've seen this happen several times.
What I did on my last bumper was to stamp my initials in the bumper on the inside corner. That way I knew I got mine back.
If your interested I have a trunk deck from a 70 here in Phoenix. Never been in an accident and still in the original gold paint.
email me and I'll give you more info.

You thought you crashed yours bad, look at the picture in the site below.

I was going to say the same thing. Find a reputable chrome plating shop to straighten it and replate it. Had that done on my 66SS and cant complain one bit.

Thanks for the input guys. Man, This bumper has a very big "kink" in it right where the tree hit it, Can they straighten that? It all depends on how much of an a-hole the insurance company wants to be, Never had a problem yet but you never know. The trunk lid is very bad, Majur bend on the inner liner. When I first looked at it I thought there was just a slight bend where the tree hit but then my son pointed out the other damage.

I will e-mail you today. I looked at the pictures, Pretty bad. My wife said "at least it wasn't the front" and I told her if I start running into trees with the front to take my license away!

I wish you were close to Texas,I've got a stright '70 back bumper with the push guards(something to look into),but the shipping would be way more than the 300.00 cost of a re-crome.
FWIW I've also got a perfect SS bumper w/pad,except for a bend by the P/S tail light...so you aren't the only one to do this type of thing.
Good luck on the rebuild.....I hate fast moving trees!!!

It's back together. The other pics are more current. The little incident happened in Yuma AZ, at the 2005 Midnight at the Oasis car show. It had been raining all morning and finally quit. We were caravanning to the show when an old guy in a Ford Fairmont just stopped in the street. Everyone checked up and I was the last guy in line. I hit some high gloss paint that had been spilled and dried, and was now, wet with the rain. Long story short. I ran into the back of my best friends 68SS who ran into the back of a 55 Nomad who ran into the back of a 41 Willy's. Bad, bad, day.

I know its usually the person behinds "fault" according to the so called laws in most states. But I would be hunting a certain individual driving a Fairmont. Thats insane. Im curious to know what they guy in the Fairmont did. Did he just go on his mary way?
