have bought a 1967 chevelle that already had the wiper motor removed. have a few questions about hooking up a new one.

1. the wiper assembly has a "elbow" with a slot that hooks up to the motor. Does the elbow turn down or up? it will hook up either way, but i realize that would reverse the direction it turned first.

2. there are two plugs at the wiper motor part and one at the washer part. the wiper part has two hots on one connector, and a single wire which does not have current on it and is not a ground. Is this correct? It does have a ground circuit that feeds thru the screw in one of the rubber grommets.

3. i hooked the motor up, though i heard a tiny bump, and after that nothing...even removed the three bolts to see if the mechanism had jammed...still nothing.

any ideas are appreciated!

Ken...motor/wiring description "looks" correct(checked my '66).Uppermost connector is "two gang plug"...2 yellow wires to top term,1 blue wire to second term, single connector w/black wire to lowermost term.
Results of my test light .......test?
1.Top term.....power all times(2 yellow wires)test lite lead to ground.
2.Second term....grounded with switch "ON"(blue wire)test lite lead to
12 volt source.(stud on alternator works well!)
3.Lower term....grounded with switch "ON" in low speed position only(black wire)test lite lead connected to 12 volt source.Motor runs full speed w/the wire disconnected.(tried it:))
Do your motor mounting grommets have steel "grounding" inserts in them?
If not...they should. Motor case must have good ground.
Crank arm(elbow w/slot)...motor MUST be in the "parked" position and wiper arms against bottom of windshield when you install it on the motor.
Tell us how you make out!;)

thanks for the electrical update. should the "elbow" be pointing up or down? can be in parked postion either way. my guess is the elbow would be pointing up...i.e. a left hand turn signal....

If you look at the sheetmetal covering the "elbow with a slot" you'll note that there is a small hole right over the area where the "elbow" is. Then if you look at the "elbow" you'll see a similar hole in the "elbow". Match the hole in the sheetmetal cover up to the hole in the "elbow" and insert an appropriately sized allen wrench ( or a nail or whatever fits) through the sheetmetal hole and through the hole in the "elbow".

Once you have done that the "elbow" is now held in the "Park" position and when you bolt your wiper/washer assembly in place everything will be properly indexed. Finally, remove the allen wrench.
