You need patience with this kit especially if it is your first attempt using it. The stencils are made so that the edges of each piece meet with the edges of the hood – front and rear. I've used this kit 4 times and had very good results. I would recommend the method described in OPG's directions...the one refers to the application of the stencil using the wet method. The wet method allows you some movement of the stencil if it is not positioned correctly the first time you lay it down. Don't use to much liquid dish washing soap and be sure to stay away from the ones mentioned in the directions. Once the stencils are on the hood and in place let them set up and dry a bit before trying to remove the backing, not bone dry...just not soaking wet...if you do try to remove the backing to soon the stencil you so carefully placed will move way to much. Be aware – don’t expect to remove the backing by peeling one corner up and zipping it off…..Proceed slowly when removing the backing...use one hand to hold the stencil in place while the other peels away the backing...s-l-o-w-l-y...be patient and take your time. There will be some movement of the stencil but not so much that you cannot reposition it. In fact get a chair and sit in it while you do this. Once the backing is removed, you need to remove the part of the stencil where the stripe will be painted. After removing these parts, clean the area well but carefully as to not damage the clean edge of the stencil. I used paper towels at first then followed with a small amount of prepsol solvent (Dupont wax and silicone remover) to remove any dish washing detergent residue. Wipe dry and let the stencil dry for a few hours or longer if possible. Next apply the supplied tape for the stripes. The best way to do this is to cut a length of tape equal to what you need to connect the front stencil to the rear plus a few extra inches…remove and inch of the tape backing and overlap the stencil with tape at the front of the hood first, pick any part of the stripe...I usually pick a center stripe first. Next, stand over the rear of the hood (remove the backing after you’ve attached the front and are standing over the rear hood), position yourself close to where the tape will meet it's corresponding stencil at the rear of the hood then by holding the tape taught, (not tight enough to stretch it...you do not want to stretch the tape it will deform!!) slowly lower the tape to connect to the appropriate part of the stencil (at the rear of the hood). To lay the next tape section, I cut one half inch sections of the same tape (as spacers) and lay them so that the edge is touching the previous laid tape. Position a one half inch section of tape every foot along the previously laid tape. Again connect the tape to the front hood stencil and stand over the rear holding the tape taught, lower the tape so that the edge of this tape touches each one inch "spacer" until the tape is connected to the rear stencil. Repeat this for the other sections of stripe. After the stripes are taped off remove the spacer tapes. I find the next step important if you want to avoid bleeding of the paint under the tape. I use my fingernail although you can use a soft squeegee too…go along every section of stencil and tape…press firmly enough to see the tape turn a darker color…this shows you that the tape is securely pressed down to make good contact to the hood, pay particular attention to the edges where you don’t want the paint to bleed underneath and ruin your tape job. After pressing the tape, clean the area once more and paint….hope this helps….it's not as complicated as it sounds...just take your time. Sam
