Does this significantly improve Muncie strength when running an OEM case, or does is fall into the category of "slight improvement / nice-to-have"? If you have a good aluminum midplate, any reason not to use it in a street / strip application?

Most alloy mid sections, have sloppy snap ring grooves. it will also girdle an older case. This has been proven for years when plates were done for the ST10. Also the bearing fit it tighter as well.
