My SS 402 has very irratic (jumpy) needle on the dash gauge. It also us out of gas at about 1/8 tank. Is this typically a gauge problem or sending unit in the tank?

Fuel indicating system grounding can be a big problem. I suggest you read Tech ref #18 in the TECH REF section of this site, helped me alot!!!

Also take a look at fuel gage info at my web site.
Bad grounding can cause irratic behavior. Gage reading high indicated stray resistance in the circuit somewhere. Check all connections for corrosion.
If the gage reads correctly but jumps around a lot due to fuel sloshing in the tank, then the dash unit is bad. Dash unit has silicone fluid which damps the needle.
