I'm starting the replacement of body mounts to my chevelle. I have a malibu with 14 body mounts (including radiator) no idea why I have the 14 and not the 10 but I do, I counted them. This is my first car and first project so I'm trying not to screw this up. Suggestions on how to would be appreciated. Basically need ideas for doing this in my garage. I have usuall tools including a shop crane. The project is a near frame off job, as I will be cleaning up and painting the frame as I replace the mounts as well. Any help from the guys who have been doing this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mike D.

When I did my 69, I jacked the body up and slid a couple of 6x6's under it so I could have access to the top of the frame. Eventually I took the body off and put it on a rotisserie. Just make sure you have plenty of support under there before you go sticking your hands between the frame and body. One other tip, spray the body bolts with penetrating oil every day for a week to aid in them coming out a little easier.

spraying is a great tip. drill holes over them if you have to for access..you won't be sorry. once they spin, u have problems.

Some cars especially big blocks came with more body mounts. My 64 coupe which im doing the frame up on (frame, drive train, suspension are all done) has 14 spots on the frame including the radiator core support but only 10 spots on the body and 2 for the core support. My kit only came with 10 mounts. The frame spots are at the very front of the frame (2 of them where the firewall rolls under), right under the doors (which are a little smaller), right at the point where the frame turns up at the axle, on top of the axle, just behind the axle, and at the very end of the frame (identical set on opposite sid of frame). My chevelle only uses one of the sets at the front of the body. I believe the radiator core support mounts are the same as the smaller ones just under the door and are to be ordered seperately from the body mount kit unless otherwise noted. Danchuck and OPG carry the radiator core support to body bushings sets for under $20. There is also a supplimental set (two more bushings) that you can purchase to complete your bushing replacement for about $22. If the steels are in good shape (inside the bushings) you can order just the rubber portions alone.

I've found that the core-support bushings do indeed fit correctly in those holes, but they are not nearly as tall. It's not clear to me that they are to be used there. The convertible kits I bought came with 14 identical body bushings plus the core-support bushings. I've trimmed a pair to fit in the holes beneath the doors. I guess I'll find out pretty quickly whether they're too tall when I finally put the body back on the frame...

Thanks for the tips. The mounts all came out without incident. Honestly pretty easy. Now I just have to lift the body and get to work. Any suggestions on how to lift let me know. I have a few untested ideas but prefere someone who has done it already.

If you place a jack on the cimped edge of the sheetmetal under the car along the side and jack it up there you will be able to get to the mounts. Be sure and place a 2x4 or 4x4 between the body and the frame if you plan to have your hands under there, otherwise Id use a pair of pliers to place the upper peices and keep your hands out of harms way.
