: Engine won't stop
first71chevellemalibu Jul 29th, 06, 12:56 PM I have a crate 454 that I just got running. Then engine will not shut off immediatly after I turn off the key. At one point, I had the ignition off, and I pulled the battery post off, but it still ran, so I had to choke the engine to kill it. What do I need to do to fix this?
fenns70 Jul 29th, 06, 1:07 PM could it be timing-----run on??????
fast71ss Jul 30th, 06, 12:10 AM Was it running well? If the motor was truckin on like a champ then that sounds kinda odd if you disconnected the battery. Timing is most likely the problem if it is just sputtering and dieseling. That was the issue on my old C10 last summer, but I never had to choke it to kill it, it would kill itself via a backfire.
Dean Jul 30th, 06, 12:56 AM You should NEVER disconnect the battery from a running engine.
What type of ignition system?
Pro68Camaro Jul 30th, 06, 1:01 AM What happens if you disconnect the battery from a running engine?
fast71ss Jul 30th, 06, 1:41 AM Kill switches disconnect the battery from a running engine. I have one on my xterra so I can shut her down if she starts to sink.
Sid Coleman Jul 30th, 06, 2:33 AM Sounds like you might have misconnected the alternator or the hot wire going to the HEI/coil. Check with a voltmeter/test light to see if your coil + or HEI + lead turns off with the switch.
I did that once-ran a new lead for HEI + to bypass the resistor wire, but plugged it into a constant hot instead of a switched hot on the fusebox. Had me wondering why no turn off? :)
first71chevellemalibu Jul 30th, 06, 9:29 AM I'm leaning towards the timing issue. It is an HEI, when I turn the key off, it sputters real rough but keeps running. I'm going to have to get a timing light and go that route for now. Thanks to all for the help
Dean Jul 30th, 06, 9:54 AM Stock HEI hu ?
Might want to slow down the idle also.

Pro68 - Wild voltage with no place to go tends to fry whatever does get voltage.
Fast71 - Talking about letting an engine run without a battery connected.
A kill switch also disconnects the alternator.
BillsCamino Jul 30th, 06, 9:56 AM MSD ignition?
If so, you'll need to refer to the owner's manual (or website) for info on a fix.
first71chevellemalibu Jul 30th, 06, 12:29 PM found the problem, Coleman was right. I have an extra power lead wired to the hei, which kept the engine running. Thanks to all
Dean Jul 30th, 06, 2:48 PM Hmm, wonder how that could cause the engine to "sputter"
