Hello Has Anybody out there Taken There Body Off?? I am Working On a 1970 Chevelle. In the Begining I was Just Going to Sans-Blast The Front Oart But The More I look at it I would Be Better Off Taking the Body Off The Chasis
Then I would Be Able to Put New Rubber Bushings Or Body Mount Bushings in!! My Question I have Gutted The Inside and Stripped The Out-side What Does The Body Weight?? and How Hard Is it to take Off.. I Like The Idea Of Sand-Blasting The Running Gear.. Any Comments?? Also This Is Kinda Dumb But When I Paint It I want to Keep The Chrome That was On The Vinyl Top It Kinda Seperated The Top From The Body Would That Look Stupid!! They Guy I Bought It From Did this and It Looks Great with the Chrome Around The Top Where The Vinyl Top Use to be
Any Comment on that also?? Thanks Kevin

I am at about exactly the same point but I have already pulled the rear-end, tranny, motor, front suspension, steering and have most of the frame bolts out. That is the point I have a slight problem on the 69 SS. Both mounts behind the tires have problems. The drivers side sheared off and the passenger side's nut is broken free from the weld. I can drill it out but my question is how the heck do I replace them. Ther seems to be no easy way to get replacement nuts into the spot they will be needed much less weld them in!
The bare body without glass, doors, interior, trunk lid, fenders, hood, etc., totally stripped shell is around 400-500 lb.,I'm guessing. You can lift one end of it by yourself. Easy to remove once you get the body mount bolts off. Use a floor jack and lots of 4"x4"s or 6"x6"s to distribute the weight and support it. If you want to roll the chassis out from under it, put long enough timbers under it to put concrete blocks under the ends of them outside the body and raise it high enough (each end a little at a time) to clear the chassis.

In the past this has come up - more than you'd think. The solution has been to cut a small 3 sided opening in the trunk over the bolt/nut. Fold it back. Remove bolt/nut , reinstall new. Then weld the patch back together. It can be hidden.

There might be other solutions, but his is the one I remembered. Do a search.

Hey Kevin,
Check out the body page on my website. I have detailed pics and descriptions of how I raised/lowered my '72 Body.

I just took the body off my frame a few weeks ago. I suspect it weighs around the 500 mark. As I am on a budget I had to improvise lifting it off the frame. I used an engine hoist to lift the rear and then the front of the shell off the frame. I made a wood frame out to 4x4's to support the body. I put wheels on the this wood frame so I could roll it out of the garage. I also left the back end of this wood frame open so I could roll the frame in underneath as I am really tight on space in my one car garage. It has worked out really well.
