: L-88, 6074 Heads...Help!!

I bought a very nice 70 Chevelle with a strong running 454. It is a late model (1991) block with #6074 L-88, ZL-1, LS-6 heads according to Mortec (open chamber, 118 cc square port). I have a valve seal leak on 2 cylinders and am debating what to do...

1. Sell the heads and buy aftermarket darts/brodix, etc. ( i know the cost)

2. Keep them and have them worked.

My question is do those heads on that car add any value to the car as a whole? I am new to this and wasn't sure if there is a nostalgic factor I'm overlooking. The heads are in great shape, no welds, super clean externally. I'm currently running low 12's and want to up the horsepower via nitrous or different configuration and wasn't sure if there are any major shortcommings with these heads in the 600hp range. I read somewhere you can have stud issues and the old aluminum can get brittle. Also, anybody know what a good set of these heads are worth? They are currently set up with pretty new Crane roller rockers and the heads look like new under the valve covers.

Thanks a bunch for your help,

chris

fyi, LS-6's never came with aluminum heads. but if it were me,i'd sell them and get the Brodix or AFR's for a couple reasons. one:i'd love to see those heads go back to a ZL-1 or L-88,or COPO car that needs them for a "correct" resto. two: even though they were the best there was,35 years ago. it was still 35 years ago. the modern head designs of today far surpass even the best of years past. if they are in good shape i bet you could get a couple grand for them, and be well on your way to those new heads with the old ones making some car guys resto "complete". IMO

Thanks for the feedback, excellent point i had not considered. A far as LS-6, I was only going on what I read on Mortec, they said '71 LS-6. As I said I'm a newbie :)

When I bought my '70 SS, It had a set of 3904391 rectangle port cast iron heads that were a matched casting date set, and were correct for a '67 high horse power 427. They were incorrect for my car, and added no value to it. I took them off and sold them on Ebay for $2200 in less than 1 day, after being assured they were only worth $500 by some people here, by the way. The fellow that bought them was restoring a 67 vette and needed that casting number and date. I got my AFR's for only $400 out of my pocket!

fyi, LS-6's never came with aluminum heads. . . .

Well, 1971 Corvette LS6's did! But, since this is a Chevelle site one would assume you were referring only to 1970 Chevelle LS6's.:)
