2 gals on base!!
basecoats mixes 1:1 so you add your 2 gals of base to 2 gals of reducer you got 4 gals of RTS product.

If you need 4 gals of paint to paint a car you got problems.

Same with clear...2gal  Depending on company and clear it mixes diff. One clear we use is PPG 2084 mixes 2:1. The other is 2055 mixes3:1/2:1.
So say your clear mixes 2:1, you got 2gals of clear, you would end up with 3 gals RTS product

The last COMPLETE paint job I did was this april painted my entire 02 chrysler concorde, bought 1 gal of 2055 and had probably half left.

Geez to me sounds like he's loading up his shelves and you are stocking it for him...Eric

It only takes about a gallon of base for my 68 elcamino. How well do you know your painter?

Your car had better be S-T-R-A-I-G-H-T if you're going to paint it black, or you will see every little dent and ripple. And just when you think you have it straight enough to paint black, block sand it even more.

Just buy DBC 9700 and forgot about it.
Something else to add, ALL DBC blacks most be sealed before appling the basecoat!!!

Now you plan on using some other paint companies sealer, and for what reason to save a buck or two? Sorry but when you combine paint products from diff makers just to SAVE, in all reality you are just playing with fire.

I just dont get it, why buy this product then that prodcut and other product all from diff companies? How do you know that all the products will work together? Sorry but all primers are just not primers and basecoat is not just basecoat. Each one is very much alike but yet worlds apart, how do you know that PPG base wont lift when topcoated with dupont clear? Why risk it just to save a few bucks. In my opinion theres a reason why some products are half the cost cause there half the product.

You wouldnt find me painting OMNI on anything I own including my wheelbarrow!!! Sorry but cheap paint yields cheap results.

Stick with ONE company from start to finish. You want to apply PCL primer then who knows what kind of sealer then PPG base and some type of clear. Later down the road paint problems occur, who you call to warrenty the paint??

Give you an example, guy there in town redid his son's 67 mustang. Used all PPG paint, time came to apply clear but found out that the store gave him the wrong hardener for the clear. PPG paint store closed, only paint store open was Dupont. So he bought dupont clear. Went home and applied dupont clear to PPG base, will needless to say it lifted like BIT@#. He called PPG, rep came out to look at it, then left laughing his arse off when guy mentioned he topcoated with dupont clear.

You think PPG or dupont gave him a dime???

Since you plan on using PPG base WHY NOT USE PPG PRIMERS AND SEALERS? I would go with k36 since you can mix it as a sealer or primer depending on mix ratio. NOW YOU KNOW THAT ALL PRODUCTS WILL WORK TOGETHER

i cant tell whether you were angry at me or just giving advice smile.gif
the local paint store is a PPG distributor so im guessing thats all they sell, but i will ask for PPG.
the only reason i asked about the Ditzler number was because i thought PPG and them are the same company (right?) but the base would be PPG, as would the clear, so i dont think i'll be having any problems. i dont know what most of these numbers i've been getting, but i've been trying to make sense of it. please remember im not a painter smile.gif

as a sealer you said to use PPG K36. right? how much do i need?

so for clear, i should use PPG 2084. now does that mix with reducer or sealer? im guessing a gallon will be enough

for base you said DBC 9700 (which is black right?, and not a singlestage?)

so these shoould all work together, my head hurts, this is why i dont paint

PCL, is Pacific Coast Lacquer, an old company that makes low cost primers and clears. It is not PPG and not connected in any way that I know of.

y'know what, thats probably why it flaked off in some parts. sounds like a crap primer. the original primer job was just applied as a quick fix to bad old paint job smile.gif

ok, sounds like im going to take the car back to metal, if it needs to be touched up, i might as well have it done right this time. ok, its all going to be PPG and its going to be black. im open to maybe using a single stage paint instead of a basecoat/clearcoat to save some money.

ok, so here is what i need. everything, primers, basecoats, hardeners, reducers whatever. i need to know how much to buy and what to buy (PPG numbers will help). basically everything minus the labor it takes to paint the car.

thanks for dealing with me guys :D

DBC 9700 is black. Read the label DBC9700 mixes 1:1/2-1. Meaning cause its so thin you can mix it as thin as half reducer, which is the way I do.

So buy a Gallon of DBC 9700 then mix it 1:1/2 with DT reducers, dt870 or dt880, depends on temp.
This will give you a gallon and half of RTS product. If you cant paint a car with that you need help.

K36 mixes 5:1 for high build, 5:1:1 for normal. Uses K201 and dt reducer.

Since you need TOUCH UPS and will need to seal you will need a gallon of K36 and a qt of k201. For the sealer use K36 but it mixes 4:2:2:1. 4-k36, 2-DCC tint,2-dt reducer,1-dcx8

I stated the wrong clear number, 2084 is the hardener, 2082 is the clear, but 2082 is a fast clear. No way in hell can any painer do a complete with 2082.
For clear I believe the best PPG clear is 2055.
Mixes 3:1/2:1. 3-2055, 1/2 Dt reducer, 1-DCX61

And since you plan on painting black then buy SS urethane because of the deeper gloss or look to it. Buy the good stuff, buy DCC or dont buy anything...Eric
