Can anyone tell me if the 1972SS came with plastic or metal inner fenders

They came both ways. This has been discussed may times here, and the conclusion seems to be GM used whatever was available at the time. My 72 Elky had one of each before I replaced the plastic one with a metal one.

The assembly manual lists the steel inner fender as optional. The mounting bolts and nuts used to connect the front part of the inner fender were also different.
