: What is the best type of body filler??
Fester Jun 11th, 02, 3:54 PM I plan to buy one gallon of body filler. i was told to use fiberglass type filler such as Marglas etc....I plan on buying the good stuff from a reputable body supply shop. Is there any type (with glass, without etc..) that would be a best buy for an all around filler?? I also plan on buying some polyester icing for topcoats..any suggestions?? Thanks guys..

sevt_chevelle Jun 11th, 02, 5:36 PM I think many will agree with me on this one rage or rage gold made by evercoat. It doesnt contain fiberglass. MOst of the body shops that Ive been in and even the ones Ive worked at all used rage.
For a final glaze I use dolphin glaze made by upol.
You cant beat those two in my opinion...Eric
ellis569 Jun 11th, 02, 5:53 PM I'm just a fan of the polyester fillers due to the fact they dont continue shrinking after theyre applied. Evercoat is a good one...another body forum you might want to check is at www autobodystore com. Are links acceptible on this board? Also, Svet, where could I get ahold of some of this Rage to try?
tblw68ss Jun 11th, 02, 6:15 PM Yes, I don't think you can go wrong with the Evercoat lines of filler. Rage is one of my favorites, another one was Blue-Ice, but my supplier quit carrying it.

sevt_chevelle Jun 11th, 02, 9:16 PM Ellis I buy all my stuff from arnold motor supply along with my shop that I work for. I dont know if its just a Iowa chain never really seen one expect in Iowa, but any place that sells paint supplies should carry it or can get it just ask.
On shrinking issue body fillers dont shrink all that much because of the high solids that they contain. The shrinkage you see is not the bondo but the primer surfacer. If you let the primer set for a week or two before you sand it it will have shrink down.

Fester Jun 12th, 02, 11:05 AM Thanks for the tips guys, I'll look for some Rage.. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
Fester Jun 12th, 02, 11:07 AM BTW, should I etch prime first or put the filler on over welds and bare metal then prime???
WayneK Jun 12th, 02, 1:22 PM Use filler over bare/sanded steel. After you have worked the plastic to you desired contour. Then etch prime the bare metal area.
I shoot the repaire area as well just to keep the etch and primer over the worked area the same mil. thickness.
As for filler my choice is Rage Gold by Evercoat.

WayneK Jun 12th, 02, 1:28 PM Just anothe thought re:Welds.
Make sure you use a SS or Brass wire brus to clean the weld area, The contaminants left by welding can be catastrophic to over coated primer/paint.
I have used a stainless steel wire wheel on a die grinder with good success.

Dave Birdwell Jun 12th, 02, 4:15 PM We use Z-Grip, and Evercoat 416 metal glaze.
Never had a problem with it. Rage is also good.
crossy Jun 12th, 02, 11:22 PM looks like pretty good prices here , http://www.crestnetsales.com/body.htm the 10th one down . FGE-112 . ask about HAZ-MAT charges though if you mail order . they can eat you up.
the body guys at the high-zoot antique restoration places use ALL METAL by evercoat . it is also listed on this site . look at the price!. It does sand like a brick though from what I remember. DAVE
MARTINSR Jun 13th, 02, 9:19 PM I am just here to support ANY and ALL Evercoat products, good stuff. I do want to clear up a little on the verbage on "Plastic body fillers" Or "Bondo" (which is sort of like "Kleenx" is to "Tissues" or "Cresent Wrench is to "adjustable end wrenches").
ALL of these fillers are polyester, everyone of them. They are all polyester "fiberglass" based. They all have polyester resin in them it is the solids used that change. They all use a certain amount of "talc". With some having short strands of fiberglass "tread" in them. Evercoat "Rage" would be a "regular" filler. It is what would usually be refered to as "Bondo". There are others that are used for special projects. Evercoat "Kitty Hair" has very short stands of fiberglass (about 1/16") while "Tiger Hair" has long strands (about 1"). There is also fillers with aluminum powder like Evercoats "Metal to Metal" these Evercoat products and many others like them are actually water proof and very good products to put down first when you are doing large repairs. They are much harder to sand and don't feather out as easy, so a coat of "regular" filler over them is recommended.
The difference between the "regular" fillers and a product like Evercoats "Glaze coat" or Metal Glaze" is the "talc" is ground much finer, so they spread like cream cheeze and sand much easier than "regular" filler.
Proceed. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
