: 505 First Road Test with Video Link

First let me set this up. I just got everything buttoned up. WHen the video starts i have just flooded the engine messing with the throttle linkage, its running rich but not as rich as it appears to be on the first hit. Secondly ignore the comments from my redneck crowd that had gathered. The camera operator is my best friend and he knows what is up.

Thinks went fairly smoothly there seems to be no oil or trans fluid leaks. After having the tranny rebuilt and upgraded it shift so much more positive now. I didnt throw the alt belt even though its crooked as hell im going to have to get some spacers to go behind my crankshaft pulley. I dont think my tack is reading steady no way that engine on the return pass wasnt turning close 7k i have to watch it because im really used to winding my sbc out.

The good news? Its crazy powerful on the first launch and ease out and never fully bury the throttle and it never quits spinning till i let out in 3rd. watch the video the black marks stop appearing as soon as i let out of it. I believe i got my hands full trying to hook her up. Once cleaned out it sounded good. I tried everything to get the video to sound like it does uncompressed with no luck. The new FR manual box working fine and the transmission is working flawless. I wanted to go to test and tune Friday but i have to much to do. I need to change the break in oil out of it, pull and inspect the plugs take initial compression readings, drop the header and clearance the upper control arm,get the front end aligned, pull the carb and tear it down lean it a tad, check the tach wiring out its not working half the time, run the valves and replace the lower radiator hose to hopefully stop the leak.

All in all im happy on the very first pass not filmed my best friend rode with me and kept his eye's peeled on the oil pressure gauge only through the run. He said it came up to 80 psi and never wavered or flucuated during the pass which with all the bbc oiling problems lately was a relief in and of itself.

let me know what you guys think.

forgot the funny part of the story. We are a town of about 13-15k. Those guys you hear talking both came over after the first run. One of em is seriously about 2 miles away at his house doing something in his yard and hears this, he tells his wife without blinking an eye "Shawn got his car running im headed over to the shop" she knows he didnt get a call so she's like how do you know? I just heard it!!! ROFL

Then the second guy has a shop that is about 3/4 mile as the crow flies and he was like i just came down to check out the commotion i was like how did you know? He said because it sounded like you were in my shop parking lot when you hit it! ROFL then he goes i cant believe those two cops arent tripping. We look over in unison right directly in front of our shop about 400 yards is a little trailer park with 2 cops living side by side in 2 trailers!!!!! I KEEP FORGETTING ABOUT THIS as i have had no worries about that in the past. THERE IS NO WAY it didnt rattle their walls hehe :( can you say make a hater on accident :( bet they WERE sleeping too.

:) :) :)

Tach just quits working dont know whats wrong with it. I set my light at 6k and it never came on. It did flash like normal when i turned the key forward. No way it wasnt reaching 6k. Hope i didnt over rev it right off teh bat. it does have a good bottom end but i dont know how much rpm starts giving bbc problems.

Oh i am also happy that even with two little dumb breaths and no evac system the motor never seemed to pressurize it didnt even blow the oil dipstick tube out.

Love that sound and the car. Reminds me of when I fired up the 468. Very similar to that ride that you took just there, only mine was 9 at night. Set off every car alarm in the neighborhood with no exhaust. Congrats on getting her fired up, and good luck.

And I had a similar situation when I fired it up. I hit the ignition in my garage, and a neighboor who lives about 1/2 mile away was in the shower and go scared. He called me and asked me if it was me :D God I love open headers.

HAHA you guys making me blush. If the motor proves to be ok that second voice you heard is a local body shop guy he was there and before he left we were working out details on getting it repainted ect. When i take it to the track ill have the only Camaro sporting TEAM CHEVELLE stickers!!!! its rainy maybe next week.

No we dont have any 1/4 tracks around here. I was told by the local Oreilly's manager that he knows we are getting a NHRA sanctioned track at our state capitol which is about hour trip WOOOOOT. that would be so sweet. I live in Stuttgart which is about 50 miles from there.

On the way back it does sound like it wants to get mean doesnt it :) I was surprised how straight its launching even though its spinning like crazy. I have a detroit locker in the rear.

Dang,
I can't watch it at work because the site is blocked due to sexual content.
Can't watch it at home either because it will never download on my dial up.

At any rate, congratulations on the first tire frying drive!

Congrats on the positive test. It sounds to me that you should have seen the light come on. Does it have an msd rev limiter in it? RPM limits and big blocks I feel is a myth. Mine gets shifted at 7500 and crosses at 7600 rpm and mine is a 540.

Wouldnt ya figure that my flatscreen with built in speakers would quit on me, so I'm using my old monitor and no speakers :( I'm glad you got it running, sounds like it will be a screamer, need some track time. It ought to run 6.70's on 7 cylinders, if you can hook it ;)

Hey Shawn,
Just got a chance to listen,,

Sounds really good to me. Give it alot more stall (5000+) and it'll likely hook better at the track.

I cranked the speakers up on the computer and my two year olds eyes got bigger than dinner plates.
We watched it a dozen more times and had to drag him away from the screen.
Nice  .

Thanks guys,
Its people like you guys that understand what goes into a motor like this that makes me proud. I cannot believe how good it sounds at 10 to 1 compression ect.

Mike thanks fella i was hoping you would get a chance to watch the video so does it sound like it should on the way back once i had it cleaned out? i mean i had flooded it terrible messing with the throttle linkage right before i backed out.

You guys may be sick of it but my wife pointed something out last night on my way back when i snorted it at an little bit of an angle watch the left front tire :)

Shawn, awesome video, and car too. I have a 67 Camaro sitting in the garage, waiting for me to start tearing into it...It's been 5 years now, and I still cant get the ambition to start it...now maybe this will help!! I just ordered that same cam for my 505....well, ordered from UDHarold, but same specs. If mine sounds and runs even close to that, I will be thrilled!!! Good job, and MORE VIDEOS!!! :beers: John

Bob,
Run at Prescottraceway.com

will probably take it to Centerville some and the rumors are NHRA sanctioned track in our capitol of Little Rock. We have a little ****ty track there now if you run over 98 in 1/th they stop you at the 500 ft mark.

Thanks66 not looking so hot right now may have found a oiling plug. Got to tear down the carb see if i can figure out why its dumping raw fuel and running so rich.

That thing sounds pretty strong. It looks like those cal tracs were working good
on the street, pulling that front end up like that.
The guys at the job luv the vid, nothing like a chevy running uncapped.
Have you decided on what size pipes that you are going to put on it yet??

Aug 2nd, 06, 12:03 PM
Thanks again guys!

You should hear it now that im getting the carb closer and leaned down a bit. The thing had fricken 98/99 jets in it!!!! on that video.

I plan to implement a 3.5 inch system hopefully with H-Pipe and using Dynomax split flow mufflers and 3.5" turn downs with the little cone sound diffusers built in.
