: solid vs hydraulic?
Perryk Jul 27th, 06, 1:36 AM Just curious if there is any advantage of a solid flat tappet cam in a 468 BBC over a flat hydraulic?
The engine is a 10:1 468, stock rods w/bolts, RPM intake, stock crank, and well worked 049s.
Primarily street car with a 250 shot of n2o at the track.
From what I have read, a solid is only advantageous at Higher RPM...past 6500....and I dont think my engine will ever see that.

gspan1830 Jul 27th, 06, 6:47 AM The advantage of a solid is knowing that the valves are right where you set them.
Johnny O Jul 27th, 06, 7:19 AM Personally, I think a solid cam will give you more 'seat of the pants' performance at all rpms....more torque and throttle response. Im definitely a fan of solids.
540Hotrod Jul 27th, 06, 8:00 AM I'm a solid lover...you don't have to worry about things like valve float and lifter pump up. Plus for a given performance, the solid will likely have better manners.
My biggest worry is that 250 shot on that mild motor, Be careful!!
The other thing is that with N20, things happen pretty quick and it's easy to over rev stuff....solids gives you a little cushion in that dept.

Perryk Jul 27th, 06, 10:27 AM Thanks guys.
And the 250 shot is a plate kit and is adjustable from 100-250...
What would be an upgrade to ensure it survives with a 250 shot? rods?

dreis454 Jul 27th, 06, 10:42 AM Rod bolts, steel crank, balanced assembly, good fuel systrem maybe even a dedicated fuel pump for the n2O

Make sure your tune is correct. More damage is done by a NOS car being out of tune then anything else.

You should also have your NOS cutoff switches in place, if the fuel pressure drops, rpm drop below a certain level, some use vacuum shut off switches, etc.
Btw, I have always liked solids over Hyds, and run solids in my BB.

wildman926 Jul 27th, 06, 2:43 PM I just put my first solid in and I really like it, 401A6Lun on 112lsa. It is in a SBC though, but it reaffirms my choice for a solid in my 496 build, which I chose the 402A7Lun.
bb489 Jul 27th, 06, 4:28 PM Isky solid roller in my 489. Love it! Sounds mean and tons of power. Plus I actually like adjusting my valves every once in a while.
