Would like to put a vinl top on a 66 SS car; because the car orginaly came with one. Beside the 4 piece molding set that go around the lower sail panel area is there anything else to consider?

Specificaly is there a difference in the stainless trim pieces that go on the drip rails on a vinyl top car as apposed to a non-vinyl top car?

Also The "66 Glenn Mitchell Collision Estimator book" that I have seems to indicate that there might be something call a "Retainer, Vinyl Cover" Front #'s 7636962-1 and a Rear # 4892692. Anyone know what this means?

Also the book seems to indicate the 2 upper back window mouldings for a 2 dr ht w or w/o vinyl cover to be the same as indicated by part #7580180-1. The is no indication as to with or without vinyl cover regarding the front whindshield molding. Just list part #'s 4541648-9 for the two upper reveal moldings. I am wondering if these are to be replaced by the 2 vinyl top retainer pieces mentioned above? Or if those vinyl retainer pieces go under the windshield reveal molding? Thanks much

Other than the trim that goes around the lower part of the sail panels
(the dividers) all the other trim should be the same.
I have pictures of one of my old chevelles that was red with a white interior with a black vinyl top and rally wheels. Pretty much just like your car.
But I don't have any way to post them. could e-mail them if you would like.

CAUTION----------I have a one owner and did a frame off, Its a 70. Tossed out the org. rain gutter mouldings, they had dents, Bought a new set"ROPO" junk 85.00 Bent the first trying to get them on,Bent the second set!!!!!Just spent $170.00 and still no gutter mouldings. Bought a third set and found out V-Top rain gutter mouldings are a little wider than non V-Top mouldings. Why? The V-top goes to the bottom of the rain gutter then over the outside of the rain gutters--And the mouldings go on to hold the V-Top to the car. Must use V-Top Mouldings or cut the V-top like I did and it sits in the bottom of the rain gutters. The end result is OK but it is not right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

....also, to add to what that crazy Russian (Bob) said, use caution when buying the vinyl top. Many venders are selling tops which aren't correct for these cars. The vinyl pattern isn't close to original, and the seams are located incorrectly. If this stuff matters to you, ask questions, do your research, and get the correct vinyl the first time. Ask me how I know....

Thanks guys, any opinions on where to get the vinyl top for a 66 Bill? Would the rain gutter moldings on a 66 be similar to your 70 Bob regarding the gutter moldings holding the vinyl top. Saw an original 67 with original vinyl top at car craft in st paul, mn over the weekend; but didn't check out the drip rail mouldings.

Jim...I'd check these guys out. (http://www.smsautofabrics.com/) I've seen their tops and they are "top" notch so to speak. Not cheep, but they have all the correct vinyl patterns and they know where the seams should be.

Thanks Bill, I just sent them an e-mail to get information. Looked at the side drip rail mouldings and I think they are original. The holes for the clips for the mouldings around the sail panel area look to be filled with a bronze metal. Anyone know if the the clips for these mouldings available?
