Martin,
Is them old "basemaker" still available for Centari ?? Reason I ask is that the best match I have found for my 71 code 62 Burnt Orange was with Centari. A friend of mine had an old can of basemaker and he shot a test panel using it and a clear coat and it was the closest match yet to the original paint. Problem is all of the local paint suppliers are telling him the basemaker is no longer available. Any suggestions ?

Boy, I am sorry, I can barely remember that even existed. Now, as far as clearing over the Centari, I don't think you need the "basemaker".

The first thing I would do is call the DuPont tech line, they should have the skinny.

Personally, I wouldn't use it. That color can be made with just about any system. All it takes is someone who gives a darn. If you don't have a good sample of the color on the car to match, use the Centari. Get a pint (if it can me made accurately)or a quart of the Centari. Spray it out on a nice test panel, clearing it will help in the match. Have the sample shot by the ChromaVison or simiar tool (spectrometer) from PPG or whom ever. Or even go thru the color chip books to find something. Have the color mixed up in a basecoat paint and again, spray a test panel. If it doesn't match the centari (provided you think that IS the proper color) then have the basecoat color hand matched to the Centari. I have used his procedure many times with great success.

The modern basecoat systems are SOOOOO far superior to an acyrlic enamel ss with clear it isn't even funny. I would go with the bc/cc.

Brian,
Thanks for the advice ... i seems that nobody around here is really interested in doing a little work to get the correct match with a BCCC system. I had a 67 Camaro race car that was painted with Centari back in 1984 or so and to be honest with you, it still looks beautiful to this day. The guy that bought the car from me a few years ago even comments on how the paint has held up and looks great almost 20 years later. The body shop that is going to paint the car uses Dupont exclusively, so if it is going to be BCCC then I will have to come up with it in Dupont. I will let you know how it turns out.

Bill,
Are you trying to Panel match this color??
I would certainly think you could come up with a Blendable match in Chroma base.
If I remember correctly, the old "Basemaker" was "Suposed" to stabalize the metallics so you didn't end up with a mottled mess when the clear was applied. It was nothing more than a "bandaid" to be able to CC the Centari.

I think the clearcoat designed for use over Centari was called 2000Pack but I don't remember anything about adding a metalic stabilizer to the color. Very old technology but yes I have also seen some examples that held up extremely well.

Yep,it does hold up real well. What I was refering to is it's use, Centari/clear would be WAY behind Chromabase as far as ease of use.

I do remember the "Basemaker", it was around 1990ish when there were many different products being tossed out there to replace lacquer. At least around here in VOC regulated country. Lot's went down the drain rather quickly (off the shelf that is, not that it was a "bad" product)
