Can anyone tell me what rpm you turn with a big block chevelle. I have a 70 ss with a 454 that i bought used and I turned 6200 with it. And the engine did'nt flaten out. I drove it and had a friend try it with the same results . He even said that he felt the engine could turn even higher. I know it has 373 gears with 427 cast iron rectangle port heads with a750 holley and a weiand g-team intake. Thats all i know for sure. Like i said I bought it used and the seller had no clue about the car. Thanks guy's. Gary

So you don't know whats in the bottom of the motor? Crank, Rods, 4 or 2 bolt, etc? The general rule of thumb is to shift when the motor falls off, or around 5500 if you don't know whats in it. IMO, without knowing more about the bottom end I would keep it to around 6000.

take it to the dragstrip or dyno to find out what the best shift points are and where the motor makes power...my 454 will spin to 6K+ no problem but at the dragstrip it likes 5200 on 1-2 shift and 5500 on the 2-3 shift..rev it any higher,it loses ET even though the motor still "feels" like it pulls
