Ok, this was my problem with my 383 and now I've got my 496 that is about to come alive. When I took out the 383 because of it dropping a valve I was left with the problem of trying to figure out why my engine was flooding. My regulator was set at 7 max psi with a holley blue pump. At idle and with a little revving of the engine the enigne was ok. As soon as I got to the burnout box and starting getting on the engine to do the burnout my car would sputter and die on me. I could smell gas , it would actually make it outside the cowl induction scoop and I could see it drip to the ground. I wasn't running an air filter when I was at the track. Could the valve being bent and me running with it bent (obviously before completely braking off) have caused the gas to be spewed out through the intake and out thru the carb? The thinkg is I never heard any back firing through the carb. I drove the car on the highway back home and it felt ok, no sputtering . The sputtering and stalling was when I really got on it. Any ideas? I am trying to figure this out because my 496 is almost finished . My guage was a cheapy one , maybe that had something to do with it giving me a false reading.

I checked all the usual stuff when a carb is flooding. I checked the needle & seat, I checked the fuel bowl level, checked the filter, checked my floaters, checked fuel pressure and went according to the reading on the guage. I backed up the screw on the regulator almost all the way out. I'm thinking I should go with a better quality regulator and a dash mounted(on the outside) fuel gauge. Any other ideas??
