I got my tailskin installed an I noticed there are several small dings in the metal. What is the best method for taking these out.

Should I hit the high spot with a hammer and cushion the back with a dolly?

I usually take a a rounded pick hammer and place it over the (outy) dent and lightly tap it with another hammer.Use a block with some 180 to tell when you have it flat. Mike

It depends one where they are and what they look like. If you have good access in behind then I use a dolly that most matches the shape of the panel there. I hold it lightly behind the ding. With a hammer that closely matches the top surface lightly tap on the ding. If it has no access from behind to do this, then all you can do is "massage" the ding out with a screw driver or something like that from behind. If there is enough room use the handle of the screw driver, if there is not room for that, use the screwdriver end. You need to push out the ding a LITTLE all over, NOT one push. Keep checking by eye ball or sanding across with some fine paper on a block like Mike suggested.

It is usually fairly easy to "metal finish" the little dings out of a new panel. If nothing else it is a good place to learn this art. If you can't do it flawlessly, there is always polyester putty, don't worry we won't tell. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks guys, just wanted to make sure I was doing it correctly. It looks like there are still some high spots that I still need to tap down. I almost looks like the panel has a little warping going on, and I'm not even hitting it that hard.

I'm kinda pissed I have to do this, but it's better than the old one on there.
