So I finally got some time off. First attempt to install the crank I discovered that it came with messed up bearings. I got a new crank kit in, and tuesday I got the crank installed, and yesterday I did the pistons. It all went well, except its really hard to turn the motor over without a bolt or something to get leverage. Had to pry against the dowel pins on the flywheel face, bent a giant craftsman screwdriver in the process.

are you putting any era speed parts on? i've really started liking early rat rod stuff (not calling your ride ratty) and the cool early parts really make some of the engines look great. and yes, that's a very exoctic looking assistant you have there........

Yes, 2x1's or 3x2's and a split manifold exhaust system is as the air-head blonde girl in A/G that was talking to "Toad" said, "That's bitchin'"!!!..

He, He!! Almost forgot!!

AND onna those 1/2 OR 3/4 "RACE" cams too, to go along with everything else!!

Lookin' good. Some of those old stovebolts actually used cast iron pistons, although I think it was the earlier ones. So I want to know, when you are going to break out the louver press for the hood?

I am a little concerned about your last comment about the engine not turning freely. Did you reuse your old pistons? If so, did you clean the ring grooves with a groove cleaner? Did you check ring gap? The engine should turn easily with just a 1/2" ratchet.

It would, but there is nothing to put a ratchet onto. Im forced to pry against the flywheel pins with a huge screwdriver.

Moloko,
I am also concerned with your "wont turn over easy" comment. That engine should turn over with a 3/8" breaker bar on one of the flywheel bolts. If it won't then something is wrong. If you bent a screwdriver of any type, then something is definitely wrong ! I dont know what year 235 it is, but most of them have main bearings that use a shim pack to set clearance properly. Some of them use them on the rods too.

Also, as much of a pain as it is, you really should set the crank in place without the rope rear main seal, to see how it turns. The rope seal when installed properly does make quite a bit of drag.

Hope this helps, If you have any other questions ... ask here or I dont mind a PM.

I can't get any flywheel bolts in, much less get a breaker bar on them. Its only 1/2'' gap between the block and the engine stand. I am also using a newer teflon seal which came with the kit. This year does use the shims, and I used them as noted. Plastigage showed everything within spec.
