: Is it a real SS 396 or a Clone??
kburwell Jul 19th, 06, 11:25 PM Hey Guys, Can someone tell me how to tell a TRUE 1968 Chevelle SS 396 convertible from a clone?? Please enlighten me!...LOL!! We have a 1968 Chevelle SS 396 convertible (...or so say the badges...LOL!!) The VIN# is: 136678B215177 Unfortunately, I do not know how to read the VIN of this year car to reveal the information I need. ....hoping it will let me know country/state of manufacture, production number, posibly engine size (...I know, I know, I'm reaching...LOL) and most importantly weather it is a TRUE SS 396 convt!
The othr guys at the shop said that the 68 had no identifying VIN code to tell weather it was a real SS 396 convt or not other than a "real" SS 396 VIN should begin with 138671
...really hoping someone out there knows something.
post reply or email me at kburwell@aol.com
"Let me know."
Thanks,
Keith

Dean Jul 19th, 06, 11:49 PM Post all the information from the trim tag under the hood and someone will decode it.
BlueSS454 Jul 19th, 06, 11:49 PM Study your body plate which is mounted under the hood on top of the firewall. Then go wo www.chevellestuff.com and look up all the info there. It will tell you the month/week the car was built and where it was built, which was Baltimore, MD. it will also tell youthe original color and interior trim color/setup.

The politically correct way to say, you have a clone. How sweet.

136678B215177:
136 - Malibu V8 (size can't be determined in 68 VIN)
67 - 2 door convertible
8 - 1968
B - Baltimore
215177 - Production sequence number for Baltimore 1968 Chevelles starting with production number 100001.
The Fisher Body plate (a.k.a., trim tag, cowl tag) will give you the interior code (such as 766) and a paint code with a letter and a number. The letter is the lower body color and number (in your case) is the color of the convertible top - something like R1, red with white top.
If you had the Protect-O-Plate, that would tell you the original engine and transmission.
webfoot Jul 21st, 06, 4:40 PM Still a chevelle ragtop, sounds like you've "done good" anyway.
