What is the best tool to use to cut the butyl tape windshield glop (on a late 90's Chevy)? I have been using a utility knife, but it has limited reach and I need to reach pretty far to get the bottom edge of the windshield.

I used a length of piano wire between a couple of short pieces of wood dowel to remove an ElCamino rear glass. I think that was the method I saw in the body service manual (for '65). Had to make a space to pass the wire through the sealer to get started. This was probably 15-16 years ago.

Another vote for piano wire. It works great, just DO NOT PRY ON THE WINDSHIELD. It will crack. I learned the hard way.

Yep piano wire, not cable or etc. Lots of people will tell you it can't be done. It can, it takes a lot of time!

A vote for the wire. I used the L-shaped tool from the auto store. It was awkward and difficult to use. The seal was real hard and I broke the windshield. If I had to do it again, I would go the piano wire route. Wife would get mad that our piano has one key that doesn't work. Hee hee.

I think the wire would have saved my window. Don't get the tool.

If you can't find piano wire, go to a music shop and buy an E or B string for a guitar(High E, tiny wire). Has a nice brass loop in one end too.

my local auto parts store carries the wire in a kit, with handles, for about 12 bucks. Ask at your local parts store for a windshield removal kit.
I tried the L shaped tool\knife designated for windshield removal, and I chipped the corner of my windshield within the first 30 seconds of use. Took that tool back where I bought it, got the wire kit, and I works like a charm. Need a second person to help use the wire like a saw to cut that old butyl putty.
