After welding on the quarter panels and grinding off the welds, can you use All Metal filler to fill the leftover pin holes? Or do you have to make sure it's completely welded? Would using lead and then All Metal a better and longer lasting solution?

Thanks,

Lee

On a quarter panel, it ain't no big thang to have pin holes. It's ok to use All-metal or plastic filler. As insurance, paint or undercoat the back side of the welded areas to prevent rust. I only have a little over 35 years of body/paint experience, but from my perspective, the use of lead is kinda like painting a T-model Ford with a brush. Only originality freaks should consider it.

Why not weld them up while your at it. Either way is fine I suppose. Me personally, I'd weld them up just for satisfaction.

red2rider - I would agree, it's just that some times I make more pin holes whil trying to fix other!

The reason I ask really, is because when I removed the factory putty in the sail panel they only spot welded it and with 2 regular welds on the ends, so I started thinking it wasn't that important to have 100% welds.

Weld the pinholes. If you use filler, it will asorb moisture and rust faster.

I think what's important is to first seal all the welds, pinholes, seams, etc., using a waterproof filler such as fiberglass resin , to seal out moisture from entering the finish plastic filler (not waterproof) from the backside.

As far as welding in panels.
You should always weld everything up. This idea of spot welding say 1/4 panels is a bad thing. The areas that don't get welded get filler. You torque the body just a little bit while driving and that thin sheet of filler that's used where the panel WASN'T completely welded will shift just enough to show the panel was replaced.. I learned the hard way, and seen it quit a bit of times. It's one of the first things I look for when thinking about a purchase.
I would tack those pinholes up just to be on the safe side..
Good luck

I have a 71' I just replaced the quarters on. I welded the top and used 3M's panel adheasive on the whole lower section. Front to back of quarter and along outer wheel well. This adheasive works wonders. It creates an awsome bond and is water proof. A little sanding and prep is needed before painting.

Just as a precaution, I painted the inside of the quarters with a epoxy paint, such as POR15. Never can be to careful where ya cant get to later. Mater of fact, painted all the new sheet metal insides with the stuff. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
