Looking for an opinion here.

I am looking for a bolt on fiberglass 68-69 SS hood and looks like VFN and Glasstek both make them. Who makes the best one as far as construction quality, fit & finish?

I have an original GM SS hood in the garage, but I am going to be doing some other mods to the hood for intercooler fitment (external latches, extra extractor vents on top, etc) and do not want to butcher an original metal SS hood. Also, the vents I've found and like are 'glass so adding them to a 'glass hood is the easiest option.

Thanks...

I had a very long talk with a guy at Carlisle from Fiber Concepts (in Pa.) and they looked like decent hoods... I'm looking at the Chevelle section now and only see L-88,2.5" cowl, and 4" cowl offered for the 68-69.Guy I talked to seamed very genuine...your call.

I went with Glasstek for my new 4" cowl hood. The underside is finished, as opposed to being open with just a brace (like my 2" cowl Unlimited hood). I saw this as being a benefit when it comes time to seal the air filter to the hood. All I need to do is cut an appropriate size hole in the underside of the hood and seal the filter to it, as opposed to building a big "air pan" for the open type hood. The downside is weight, the Glasstek is MUCH heavier than the Unlimited. About 35lbs vs 15lbs.

Here's my Glasstek hood.

Like John said, grind the opening out to fit your air cleaner.

John, how long did you wait before you got your hood delivered? I ordered mine on 5 June and just got it last week. Not complaining though, it was worth the wait. I am very pleased with the detail and finish work, it's definetly a high quality piece. Mine is for a 79 Camaro with a 4" cowl, and you are right, it's one heavy rascal.

Yes, but how much does a stock metal hood weigh vs. the 35 lb. Glasstek? Also how about usbodysource? Their hoods look good from the pictures on their website. www.usbody.com or www.usbodysource.com or about 2 or 3 other clone URLs. JB
