: 66 Chevelle ss radiator for 502/502hp

I have a 66 Chevelle SS 396 that i had converted last year to a 502/502 hp with a turbo 400 transmission. The car has a new 3 core radiator and it constantly runs between 190-195 degrees out at highway speed. When in town with stop and go traffic it goes between 210-220 degrees. That is to hot to run since it has a 180 degree thermostat.

I am thinking that I need a 4 core radiator. I put a fan shroud on the radiator and there was no change in the temeperature.

Has anyone else had a similar problem and if so, what was your solution? Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Harold

I`m using aluminum radiator with electric fans with the fans running off of a toggel switch my 454 runs at 160*in stop and go traffic. Hawaii weather 85*

having the same issue with my 454/wuss radiator combo. but i have a two core and no shroud. i'm sure that a three or four core and a shroud will fix it. however you are running 50 more CI than me and may need to try a four core, electric fans,or a 160 t-stat to keep cool if you live in a hot area. a trick that i picked up helped a bit: drill two 3/16 holes in the flat part of the t-sat at the 12 and 6 O'clock (or wherever as long as they are 180* apart).this gives it a little extra flow. you may need to go with a H/V water pump.

Don that owns (Alumatec) www.chevellecooling.com has the set up made for that car, I have used several of his systems and they work 30 degree's better than any other I have tried.

I think all you need is a quality aluminum radiator. No need for electric fans and all, unless you want to go that route. I run a zz502 with a Griffen radiator, stock shroud and clutch fan. My temp stays between 170-180 and might reach 190 at times when stuck in traffic.

As Aces70 stated
your fix may be as easy as one of our CORRECT FIT radiators
