I unscrewed and removed the front drip rails on my 70 to treat some rust. Everything is in DP90 now, ready to go back together. I'm wondering what you guys recommend to seal the drip rails back up. Also was wondering if I should remove the remainder of the drip rail caulk on the car, since it's cracked and shrunk. Any tricks to applying the stuff?

Tony,
I just finished putting the roof rail weather strip channels in my 71 resto. Heres what I did..
a. the channel itself had a neoprene tape on it. I scaped it off and found at advanced auto parts some 3M tape for putting camper shells on pickups. Same stuff worked great. I had already cleaned all the old caulking off the body.
b. screwed the rails back on and used 3M strip caulk at the joints, and to cover all the holes and screw heads in the rail from the screw side. Put strip caulk in the rail along the interior seam.. Mine had it there when they came apart??? Glued in the new rubber.
Hope this helps..

I did the exact same thing on my 72.

Cool,
Just to clarify, though...I'm talking about the actual drip rail piece that screws into the A-pillar. i.e. there's no rain gutter on the windshield posts when they're removed. Is this what you guys are talking about? It seems like there was seam-sealer-type crud supplementing the screws to hold these pieces in place.
Any thoughts about removing the old caulk along the rest of the drip rail?

Your talking about seam sealer being on the actual A-pillar right? This was underneath the weather-stripping channel "rain gutter?" the actual drip rails are the lip that is welded to the roof line and A-pillar. These do not come off. Only the weather strip channel is screwed to the roof line / A-pillar. This stainless piece is what I'm talking about. The factory assembly manual also suggest putting in "pumpable" seam sealer if necessary. Go to NAPA or bidy supply place and get a tube of flexible seam sealer, cut the tip small. You will have to apply the caulk before placing channel back on.
the caulking your seeing is black and white?
this is the sealer (white) the black is strip caulking.
You can get by with using new "tape " as I said before and the strip caulk.
I would however go ahead and remove the old stuff. Save yourself some time and use some acetone and plenty of rags to remove it.
