I had the same problem on my 66 and I ordered a dash top panel kit fron OPG #X4642B. Even though I was new to welding and body work I tackled it and had good results.

was that the little strip they sell for dash top? or is it a hole top plate for the dash?

your 66 looks killer, its the same color on mine and is the same wheels also!but i'm going to paint mine back to the original color(marina blue)

are those the original bumpers or are they rechromes or repo's? i have to get new bumpers for mine! and who do you like for repo parts?

thanks! chris

The kit is actually two strips, one fits under the windshield and extends forward of the windshield. The other is for the top of the dash and extends to where the defroster vents just start. The bumpers are repo's and I am pretty happy with the fit and quality, cost was about $160 for each. I get alot of my parts from Jim Dyer Classic Chevy's in Stockton due to the fact he can ship next day and has always been fair to me.

The bumpers are from Dyer they are now $180.00 each. I often take a roadtrip up to his shop which is right next to Freeway 99 in Stockton.

how hard was it to do this job? and did you remove the lower dash, stering collum and all the wiring etc? did you cut the rusted dash out and put in the new upper dash strip bye butt welding it together or lapping it over and welding it?

and do you have any pics of this jod, like before and after?

thanks! chris

Chris it was a job! Actually my interior and wiring were gutted because of the shape the car was in when I found it in the barn. After 15 years the mice had eaten up alot of wiring as well as the seats. Lower dash was pulled and it made the repair alot easier. One note is that when you cut the dash you need to support it from the underside as it will want to fall because onlt small welds in the lower corners will be holding it up.

Hello,

The windshield base repair kit from OPG comes in 2 pieces. As previously noted, one piece goes from the windshield to the first defroster vent opening on the dash. Where does the other piece go? Does that go directly under the windshield to the cowl?

Thanks,
Kevin C

I have the same problem on a 67 El Camino (not in the dash area). Check out this link www.rustbusters.com. (http://www.rustbusters.com.) There is one of these spray welders near me. I'm going to check it out before I go to all the work to cut & weld those panels in. It sounded like another miracle fix until I researched on net. I have no knowledge if this will work or not.
